Hey. As an aside and in regard to your mention of it in this video—not at all complaining, as a fellow writer, reader and close reader, and essay writer also working g a day job, I totally get it—I didn’t see my name in the Witch guide credits and went to make sure my subscription was up to date. I realized I was still on the lowest tier so I upped it to the highest. I prolly don’t have to say it at this point since I’ve been here for some time but, I appreciate all your work and looking forward to any writing and videos and whatever else you’re working on.

Speaking of shows, wondering if you've seen severance. With the 2nd season coming out might be a good time for a watch

I started a Robert Eggers playlist on YouTube, so far it is mostly interviews with him and his collaborators, some other commentators I find interesting, and one of his early short films, The Tell-Tale Heart! https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhlDrUWYsMGPRBtTtUOk0epawWVi63gqq&si=r6H7tQUdNDWUblXG

Speaking of Apple TV, it's not all shit! 😅I feel like some kind of commentary or reaction of Severance from you would be great - although I don't really know how much there is to dissect symbolism and referential wise. Also I'm a new patron so maybe you've already done something in relation to Severance. edit: omg just listening on to your commentary on Sopranos and Chrissy, I actually just watched Sopranos for the first time recently and ugh although REDACTED shocked me, I felt like it needed to happen and seeing how the show ends REDACTED, it was satisfying in a way to see that relationship get a spotlight narrative wise in the final season...if you catch my drift I'm trying to be careful lol

I have a source for you on the Nosferatu video. In college I took a course at The Ohio State University called Slavic 2230 - Vampires, Monstrosity, and Evil: From Slavic Myth to Twilight. It was one of my favorite courses and the professor was/is super insightful and excited about these topics. We learned a ton about the early vampire myths and how people in that area practiced vampire rituals. I think he would be very helpful if you needed someone to reach out to about the village section of the movie and I'm sure he has thoughts on lots of topics that will be covered! I will message you with his email if you would like, I don't want to just type it here, just in case.

Agreed. Jesus didn't back down when criticizing religion and we shouldn't either.

Oh my god king for not showing any spiders

Happy New Year! I am only halfway through VVITCH complete guide (it's got a lOt in there). It is very well done, as is all your content, and has brought some of the best research to light. Emotionally though, my top 3 favorites remain The Green Knight, Hereditary, and Alien guides - in that order. TGK especially - I was quite ignorant about Arthurian legend to start with yet when I saw the movie it just stuck in my head like a fever dream. The ultimate guide not only cleared up a few things but also brought up the respect for the movie and the thought behind several notches. Can't wait for Beau is Afraid - it's a rare gem that gets better with every viewing.

How do we message you our Beau if Afraid clues/insights/questions/theories? Here?

I think you captured the nuance of the witch/feminism overlap beautifully. I can’t remember the line, but you mentioned in the complete guide that the people living in those times wouldn’t have recognized the correlation between witches and female autonomy. Women being a lower class of people was so ingrained in their society that they couldn’t understand or articulate these reactionary fears. That’s what makes the film and the witch trials so scary, there’s no clear villain to blame just a bunch of scared people letting fear run their life. Clearly I absolutely loved the video! Never seen Beau is Afraid, but I’m looking forward to watching it in preparation for your next video. Take care of yourself and enjoy some downtime!

If you're considering doing a different kind of reaction video, may I suggest checking out the How It Should Have Ended series? I think that it'd be more fun, and it's definitely less mean-spirited. It's kind of amusing that you ended up getting more flack for not coming down hard onto Christianity. I do think it's true that you're never going to please everyone, and there is a significant reactionary thread running throughout all online spaces right now. Algorithms incentivize extreme responses, and it's training people to respond that way as well. I felt like you were quite fair-handed, and I'm a pretty strong leftist. That sucks about the Patreon credits, and it's sweet that you are obviously distraught about it. Mistakes happen. The amusing thing for me is that I did not know that that was a perk of subscribing until I saw it in the comments of the post that people were sad about not being mentioned 😆 NOW I want it tho! (My name was included.) Final question/suggestion: Have you ever played any horror games? A play through of a shorter one would be a fun video. If you haven't played Soma yet, you really must! Thanks for all your hard work and Happy New Year 🍾

People just like to argue and troll! I'm not sure if lack of critical thinking is the primary problem, in those cases. Some people just like stirring the pot for the sake of it. And how do you know if the commentators are young, or on the left? It could be an old, white, right wing guy trolling. It could be a bot. All good reasons to take everything online, especially comment sections, with a massive grain of salt. Maybe my avatar is what I look like, maybe not, you know?

Robert Eggers confirms extended cut of Nosferatu on blu-ray (I'm so excited !!!) https://www.reddit.com/r/roberteggers/comments/1hqibbf/robert_eggers_confirms_extended_cut_of_nosferatu/

Happy New Year!! We haven’t finished watching the VVitch video, so I haven’t looked through the comments yet, so sorry of someone already mentioned. A bit dated, but still wonderful resource, is the film The Burning Times - available for free online. Has some deep dives into feminist and class based analysis of the persecution as an attack on women. Also the work of Silvia Federici is great (Caliban and the Witch being the prime example). Nit a criticism of your approach which I have found quite rational thus far, just other great resources. Thank you greatly for all you do!!

I personally hated Beau is Afraid (after the first act which is a recreation of the original short—that part I loved) and had no intention of ever revisiting it, but now I find myself looking forward to a rewatch paired with whatever ungodly length of guide video is to come!!

Shannon

I'm so glad the spiders are not making an appearance in Beau! You the real MVP

Leon Murray

Severance is great! I've also loved Slow Horses and recently Disclaimer from Alfonso Cuarón was very good

Interestingly, I think you were EXTREMELY clear and nuanced in your explanations of how Christianity played into things and the people in the 1600s deep fear of actual witchcraft happening. I feel like over the last five years or so, there’s just been a decrease in critical thinking, and I’ve noticed people will lambast creators if they aren’t INCREDIBLY specific about every topic. Videos about eating right and working out are filled with comments like “well actually people with xyz restrictions can’t do this, how could you not consider that before making this video!!!!” Or “well actually this recipe can’t be healthy because it has peanuts and I’m allergic!!!!” It’s like an increasing lack of WANTING to understand other peoples views, and instead looking for any tiny reason to find fault in content. It’s exhausting but I’m noticing it more and more. (Not to get too political, but I’m very much on the left and I’ve personally noticed this a lot among younger people on the same side of the political spectrum, like a common denominator that if content isn’t PERFECTLY nuanced then it must be BAD.) Anyway, just another supporter who thinks you were very clear in your explanations. Sorry that the negative comments always stick out the most.

Caroline

Yea can’t wait! I badly need a new show.

Brandon Hunt

I'm a Catholic lady and I thought you were completely fair and even-handed in the video.

Siobhan Morris

the trailer for severance season 2 looks amazing as well and it’ll be out soon

marrow

Apple TV has some bangers tbh. Silo was solid and Severance season 1 is the best season of TV I’ve seen in a long time.

Brandon Hunt

As a Christian who understands Christianity has flaws I really appreciate how fair you were in both your criticisms and your overall characterization of it. I really appreciate a piece of work that isn't entirely unhinged and actually has a nuanced objective view and that isn't mired in political modern ideas. Obviously we can't escape our modern lense but we can be measured and not ravenous to condemn those in the past for ideals we've just come to embrace in the grand scheme of things. We can criticize them while also understanding the true motivation and mindset was very much a product of it's time. Anyways much appreciated.

Daniel Smith-Hamilton

Dropping a comment to let you know that I super appreciate all the work you put into your videos! I didn’t really “get” Hereditary prior to your video on it, and afterward I found a newfound appreciation for the intricacies and detail put into it. Watched your midsommar video on my Italy trip every night, and now on the patreon for the VVitch!!!!!! :) I can’t believe you put your work on YouTube for free, it’s insanity!!!!!!!

Molly Gould

Happy New Year!Thank you for the all the effort you put into these videos!!Cheers to many more years to come
