Going through your suggestions and announcing a winner (True Detective)

Just a little podcasty ramble/reaction to all your wonderful movie suggestions.

Thank you all for voting, True Detective Season 1 was the clear winner. As I say in the video I'm going to approach this one slightly differently to Longlegs/Suspiria but hopefully in a way that makes it more informative.

Super excited for this one, it's probably my favourite bit of television ever and getting the chance to revisit it is already brightening my humours. Obviously it is eight hours of media so it may take me a bit longer to watch/edit etc. but I may do it in two or three parts as there's so much to say.

Hope you're all having a wonderful week so far, thanks so much for all your support.

Can’t wait for the TD content, and also it’s such a pleasure going through the comments on these posts and adding movies to my watch or rewatch list :)

That movie really surprised me, it stuck with me a lot longer than I thought it would!

Second Green Room, Blackcoat’s Daughter and Saint Maud. Those are 3 of my favorites in recent years. Keep up the great work! Love your stuff.

Totally agree. Mostly, I love the execution of the storytelling. Such great imagery in this picture. But yeah, I'm not sure how valid or trustworthy Mr. Walton's tale is, but I'm far more inclined to believe that something like that is far more possible vs the reality where our world is either alone in the universe, or will remain unbothered by other beings swimmin' around out there. Peeps are gonna get snatched, if they aren't already. And if they can get to us before we get to them, they'll probably have the technical-logical upper hand. Hopefully they get here before we blow ourselves up. If civilisation is gonna fall, I'm more for an alien take over vs human stupidity.

Also really appreciate how you take the time to talk about everyone’s comments, even if they aren’t chosen or didn’t get a ton of votes! Makes it feel a lot more like a community!

Caroline

Glad you’re feeling better!!! Sounded like a really gnarly sickness :(

Caroline

Greatest Hits

Kind of!! More like magic in general. Magic and mental illness!! What more could one ask for?

Erin Russell

At least now I know about the indie one! Still a win in my book🏆

Annie

I haven't heard of it but if it has anything to do with witches then I'm in.

Aha, okay so yes I love the film, however because I am genuinely into this stuff it's a bit like being into Homer and then watching Troy. I don't necessarily believe Travis Walton (I don't necessarily disbelieve him either but this is a case that relies almost entirely on his anecdotal evidence) and he has been quite vocal that the film and his experiences don't line up. Mainly I guess that he didn't feel as though they were more benevolent than the aliens presented on screen iirc. So yeah I do love it, because it's awesome to see something like this visualised, but I have hangups watching it because either way we cut it this isn't exactly what 'happened'. It also scares the living daylights out of me because there is at least 60% of my brain that believes some of this is real. I'm yet to see 'No One Will Save You' because I'm actually terrified to do so. Imagine how scary vampire films would be if you were convinced vampires could be real. And that's what I find so fascinating about all of this, that we're not just imagining what this could be through media, we're doing so based on things that very well might be real. I think if we exist and we exist in an essentially-or-actually-infinite space then it's a no brainer that aliens do exist somewhere, whether or not they've ever visited here. So it's not just our projection of ourselves, our hopes and fears for the future embodied, it's a literal bet on something we may well one day encounter. I find that fascinating and important and scary all at the same time.

Oh I know the one. And it's so tacked on storywise just so they could do it, but I have seen it many many times because it's perfect. Probably my favourite longtake scene of all time but I'd have to rewatch 1917 and The Revenant again to be sure.

Novum

Oh lol, sorry! I have just looked that up and it does look a lot better, I shall keep it in mind!

I'm torn on Season 2, there are elements I love like Rachel McAdams, Rachel McAdams hair, the fact we get a gay action hero that is really the only above average combatant in the show, Colin Farrell in general, the shotgunning, the animal masks, Vince Vaughn's last scene. There's a lot of good, but imo it just doesn't reach the heights of S01. I think part of it is the director being so good, another part of it being that I really wanted the supernatural conspiracy element to translate across seasons. I think Fargo does a really good job at connecting it's various anthology/seasons together in a rewarding way. There are other reasons but I've already written them into my notes for the video so I'll leave them for now!

I get the feeling that will win the next one looking at the voting here!

I'm so excited for what's to come!!! You always do awesome work!!!! Looking forward to another poll. I think you might enjoy Spell (2018). Weird movie, really great soundtrack (though I'm biased because Patrick Stump has me in a chokehold).

Erin Russell

Oh, you gotta be watching Fire In The Sky if you like them aliens. Love that movie

jogrnaut

One of the best long takes of all time (even with a hidden cut or two I think). You know the one.

Greatest Hits

The indie Blink Twice looks cool, but I was technically talking about the 2024 film directed by Zoe Kravitz. I should have been more specific!

Annie

Thank you man! Guess I’m gonna have to do a 8th rewatch as well. I’ll also add that season 2 is one of my favorite stories of television as well. I know some have issue with the season but I absolutely loved it. Very eerie.

Alton

Dang I was really hoping for The Substance

Phoenix

Arrival was wonderful the first time I saw it, and every time since. When I watched it the first time I was studying interlanguage. A different kind of alien movie altogether. Done really well. I will have to seek out the short stories, I'm currently in the midst of reading Radium Girls which delves into the true story of Marie Curie's discovery of radium, and how that led to the deaths of more than 50 women in the radium paint industry in the United States.

Scarlett

YES! Starting my rewatch

Nicole M

Oh you have an amazing eight hours ahead of you. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Arrival is S tier material. The short story is really good if you haven't read it, it's called 'Story of your life' by Ted Chiang, but I really like the story that precedes it in the anthology called 'The Tower of Babylon' (I think). Very inventive also with a kind of biblical/sci-fi melding to it.

Novum

Sounds like I’ve got to watch True Detective! Also- if you do the alien tier list you should definitely include Arrival

Scarlett

FUCKKKK YESSSSS I LOVE THIS SHOW. Wow I'm so incredibly excited.

Daniel Smith-Hamilton

Yesss, let's goo! So excited
