Creasing laughing at this

Not the most professional post from me but someone linked me it and it's so funny I just had to share it. I actually do follow this subreddit and despite it just ripping on me I have to say I think they have some valid points.

PLEASE DO NOT POST IN THE THREAD - IT SHOULD BE MET WITH GOOD HUMOUR AND THE RESERVED INTENSITY OF DAVID ATTENBOROUGH

I started watching it thinking "there's no freaking way I'm going to watch a video that long" but then I saw that one of the chapters had to do with Utah, and Mormonism. I live in Utah and have been recovering from Mormonism for over 20 years. So, yeah once I saw that, I was like "damnit now I have to watch the whole thing." Then I had to watch Hereditary so I would know what you were talking about, and so I could watch the guide for that too. It's now one of my favorite movies.

Phoenix

I was so extremely excited when I saw the Midsommar guide, after seeing it over 20 times. I watched the Midsommar guide while making a baby blanket. It was wonderful, and it was great to have something in depth to watch

"must be shit if it takes 7 hours to explain" followed by "my interrogation only took 20 minutes" is at least snort worthy. Though it is a shame, like the sentiment from everyone else here. There's so much to learn from breaking down stories; they're highly compacted versions of the story that was inside the creators head when they made it. That's what symbolism is about, shorthand implications of complex ideas and feelings. Because if a story had all the parts an artist/author wanted it to have, they would probably all be about the length of a full work day. I learn a lot from these kinds of analysis for my own work. Ideas in themselves are exciting, and Its a shame not everyone has the patience (or the time, I guess lol) to engage with super long form content.

torpid entree

Same, I watched this analysis and was going to move on to the Hereditary analysis but had several friends say I should watch the movie first lol. And I didn't put it off because I wanted to watch the analysis asap

To be honest the main reason I even watched Hereditary is to watch your guide to it. I love Ari Aster but I knew this movie had demons in it and I’m usually not a fan of demon movies, but I wanted to be up to speed to watch your breakdown! I enjoy the watching someone infinitely more observant and cinema-savvy than me breaking down every piece of lore and foreshadowing and hidden meaning even more than watching the movie myself. It’s like I’m re watching the movie through someone else’s eyes, and also almost like I’m watching it with someone else who enjoys nerdiness as much as myself, I don’t know many people like that irl.

Tokki

Exactly, I'm not going to hate on them for having a very normal reaction to something quite abnormal to the platform. I'm just ecstatic that there are people that do seem to see value in it.

He was absolutely right and I think anyone who's written fiction/created art in general knows the truth of it. The one I always get commented is 'dude sometimes a cigar is just a cigar', as if quoting Freud to me would somehow shatter my worldview. I then point out to them that Freud never said that and the conversation generally ends there. I do understand it isn't for everyone, some people do just want to see what they're seeing and nothing else and they'll push back vociferously against any deeper meaning, against interpretation in general. The problem with that particular low-road is it just doesn't lead anywhere, whereas the alternative will grow many different parts of you. I agree with your sentiment regarding the "deep and perpetual gazes" also. I was a bad student. I did just the same thing until I didn't. It doesn't mean you aren't reaching them on some level, they just haven't had their awakening yet to become energised and realise what they're passing up. But it aggravates me to some degree when people act as though you must be some kind of weirdo/pseudo-academic etc. for going places they weren't willing to. And when the push-back becomes an attack one can't help but wonder if their insecurities about what they don't know are really steering the ship. Edit: speaking generally not in reference to the above thread at the end there, I think they're being driven by my videos being extremely long-winded and generally an odd thing to be doing!

It’s good to know that the track landed well. It means more than you would know that you appreciate my taste in music. Hopefully that continues to ring true. As I am currently building as many cool points as I can because you just keep getting cooler in my book. You’re a well rounded human. I’ll be adding 36 Chambers to my long list of things to experience for the first time. (Further distractions will appear elsewhere.)

Benny Ford

ahaha nooo, that's a shame they don't see the fun in watching a detailed breakdown of the movie and its themes and callbacks. But to each their own idea of fun of course. Luckily there are also many who DO understand and have fun with it too (speaking of im due for a rewatch)

Sorceringingarts

Sigh. As an avid literary theorist, I really appreciate your application of these processes to complex cinema. It keeps my brain engaged and thinking. Critical analyses isn’t for everyone, I’ve seen the deep and perpetual gaze settle in across students eyeballs. I get it, but it still disappoints me that instead of passing over it, some folks outright dismiss or reject it. It’s all valid. Derrida was right, “il n'y a pas de hors-texte.”

Alexx T. Holden

That's really kind of you to say, but it honestly doesn't bother me in the slightest! From what I can tell the people who had actually seen it were relatively fair/kind to it and the majority were just reacting to the length of the thing. Which is fair, if you do crazy stuff you have to prepare for crazy feedback, at least they were funny about it. I've had faaaaaar worse just in comments on the video.

I've listened to a lot of the new Em album but first time hearing this one, it's strong. "You nerdy freaks would find something wrong with 36 chambers" Not only do I love 36 Chambers but I just love GZA in general and 4th Chamber/Shadowboxin/Liquid Swords album in its entirety is one of my all time favourites. You have a great taste in music Benny!

My response would be these lyrics. https://youtu.be/0QvdDX2Q7rI?si=RsCxSYBn_rRzZJtS

It’s impressive that you can take this in stride. I know it just comes with the territory to receive negative attention with these kind of niche things but you poured so much effort and time, and attention to detail to all your videos. Those people don’t matter obviously the grand scheme but I feel for you still to stumble across it. You are a stronger person than me 😂

Vista Chang

It still is shocking to be honest, but it all happened so gradually that I guess I had a small but constant supply of positive and negative to get used to. Thank you so much dude, I can't wait to show you guys it either!

Novum

It must have been shocking then if that was truly your perspective to get so much praise. You absolutely deserve it you are not only talented but hard working and it clearly shows can't wait to see the witch video!!

Daniel Smith-Hamilton

I honestly thought this would be the public reaction to every video so it's kind of reassuring and heartwarming at the same time. And agreed, being able to laugh at yourself is essential!

Novum

Hahaha yeah being able to laugh at yourself makes your job so much more enjoyable. That threat is so funny. I can enjoy your work while laughing too!
