Interviews and Interludes | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

This week saw another surprise video, in the form of an interview with Kerry Moscogiuri from Amnesty International UK.

Regular readers of this little update will have noticed that I didn't manage to publish an entry last week, and that was because we were in London filming a couple of interviews as part of our early attempts to pilot an interview series.

Throughout dreaming it up, I've been really keen to avoid (literally!) "phoning it in" and simply recording some Zoom calls. I wanted to make sure we went to meet people in "their spaces", and to frame the interviews with proper pieces to camera to provide some context to the conversation.

Trying out the first one was an interesting experiment. We learned a lot about how we will (and won't!) do it in the future. But the interview is on a really important topic and I hope was enlightening in some way.

My feeling is we might work to "prune" the interviews a touch in the future so we can ensure they're as punchy and focussed as can be. We obviously want to balance that with ensuring it doesn't disrupt the flow of the conversation though.

Of course, whether or not these interviews will be something people want to watch remains to be seen. But, I've been lucky enough to interview some fascinating people over the past few years, and my hope is it can provide an opportunity for us to be able to share some great thoughts from interesting people.

Trying out new stuff like this is always a big risk. Outside of the time and money required to pop out and film something like this, it always feels quite vulnerable to attempt something different which may soar or sink.

I hope you find it revealing in some small way, and we'll see what the future is for the series soon!

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!

I think I'm interested to experiment with how we "prune" the interviews a touch, as I mentioned in the post. I obviously want to ensure we accurately reflect the conversations that are had, and that we don't misrepresent anyone in either a positive or negative way. But, is there, for example, a really punchy, 20-minute version of this interview? Where, if we feel like something has already been covered, we choose which bit to keep in? Or do I change how much time I sit down with each person for? The danger, obviously, is that we end up with something which feels too produced and "efficient", which takes away from the charm of it being an interview.

Can you share any significant "won'ts" you learned from this first interview? Significant "wills" too, if you like, but those are often less fun. :D
