Short King | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

No baby!

I was fairly sure when I wrote last week’s instalment of The Friday Update that it would be my last for a fortnight or so.

After many, many months of waiting, it seemed pretty likely that my wife and I’s baby would have arrived and I would be on paternity leave.

Apparently he’s not great at deadlines.

I’ve thus spent the week in a strange holding pattern, unsure exactly how things will pan out each morning, and then having to get back into work mode.

Despite all that, we’ve been making incredibly progress with the scripts for a couple of upcoming videos: one about how politics in the UK became quite dysfunctional, and another about whether or not university (or college to our American friends!) has become a bit of a scam.

We’ve also been experimenting with transforming some of our videos into short form pieces for TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

The goal is to try and find some new audiences for the huge amount of videos we’ve got in the back catalogue, maybe bring some people over to watch the whole things, and also to try and bring in a few extra pennies to help keep things afloat.

And it’s being going reasonably well. I’ve even ended up making some dedicated TikTok’s despite the platform making me feel 1,000 years old.

But, if you’ve ever been watching one of my videos and thought “wow, I wish I was watching a 90 second clip from this which has been converted into vertical orientation” then head on over to my TikTok and check it out!

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!

Good luck with the kid! American here - unless you're discussing community college, most people I know refer to their higher education as a university (state or private). Of these, one might be worth doing, the other has become a scam. Nowadays, connections matter more than degree.

I went and watched the TikTok screencapped here, because "Why we shouldn't care too much about free things for rich people" is a hugely intriguing title, and it was an excellent thesis made well. It's particularly relevant to student debt discourse, where among the many worthless arguments in favour of extorting students into huge debt is that free university would be a handout to the rich, and it's like... yes, it would be a handout to the rich, because the rich are included in "everyone" and education should be free at the point of use to *everyone*.
