Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.
No baby!
My weeks are a bit strange at the moment.
As many of you know, my wife and I are currently expecting a baby and, when that happens, I’m planning on taking a couple of weeks off.
Two weeks is the legal standard in the UK so Tom (the employer) is going to try and force Tom (the employee) to do so, in order that I can really enjoy the first moments of the little one’s life!
But, until then, I’m powering on!
We’ve decided to pause a couple of the big projects we’ve got going whilst my time is a bit uncertain. It unfortunately makes it a little difficult to schedule interviews etc. when we don’t know when I’m going to temporarily disappear.
Our big investigation into the rise of testosterone ads has thus been placed on ice for a month or two. Although I’m SUPER excited about getting that one out as I think it’s gonna be fascinating.
This week, I’ve thus been working on research and writing for a couple of other pieces we’ve got in the pipeline.
The first is looking at the death of political centrism, through the lens of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
I want to explore why centrism doesn’t quite communicate with us in 2025, in a way that it apparently managed to in prior decades.
And, tomorrow, I’m going to be interviewing a member of parliament for a piece we’re working on about Buy Now Pay Later schemes.
My goal is to take a slightly different angle on the topic than anything I’ve seen or read about it so far, by diving into the ways in which responsibility for stimulating the economy has been abandoned by governments in ways which rely on individuals to take on large amounts of personal debt.
We’ve also going something about the changing role of universities in the pipeline too!
So, it’s strange and exciting times over here—and I’m looking forward to sharing these various projects with you soon!
Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!
