It’s Been a While, I’m Sorry | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

It’s been a while since I wrote here. For which I can only apologies. We’ve been very, very busy.

Over the past month, we’ve been making a big push to get ahead on a bunch of future projects.

Until now, we’ve mostly been working on a project-by-project basis; crunching to finish one video, before dusting ourselves off, taking a day or two to breath, and then moving onto the next.

This works well in terms of being able to focus-in on whatever’s next-up, but we’ve found it creates a very staccato rhythm of work. After one video goes out, there’s a lot of thought and effort involved in having to get the wheels moving on the next.

Our team of two recently expanded to a team of three, with the excellent Jack joining us as a Research and Production Assistant. And, with a little more capacity, we’ve been trying to move towards a steadier stream of production.

The goal is to always have one video in pre-production (researching, arranging interviews), another in production (for which we’re writing, filming, and otherwise bringing to life), and another in post-production (effectively, being edited).

I’m really positive that this is going to make for a much smoother life for everyone involved going forward; and is hopefully going to allow us to get videos out to you all a little bit quicker.

That being said, it has made for an extremely hectic push as we’ve tried to make that extra progress.

Last week, I was providing feedback on the edit for the next video, whilst also pulling together the script for the one after and filming some vlog-style sections for the one after that. Alongside recording a couple of podcasts and trying to, you know, eat and stuff!

And the fact that the upcoming video involves a humongous road trip to edit down into something watchable made even just that task quite the undertaking...

It was a lot.

Nevertheless, I think the upcoming run of two or three videos is really exciting. We’re pushing ourselves to experiment with the format, pushing even more interviews and on-the-ground reporting. And I hope it’s just a starting point in being able to produce some really, really exciting stuff going forward.

One thing I always tell people that I love about this job is that, eight or so years in, I’m still constantly learning and finding things I want to learn! Hopefully that inquisitiveness and energy is going to come through in the next bunch of vids!
