Back to Streaming | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

This week we did something a little exciting and relaunched my Monday-night Twitch stream!

I began streaming back in November 2023 after Twitch offered to effectively sponsor a run of three months of streaming. The show gathered a bit of momentum (particularly the post-stream clips on YouTube) and we kept it going until early summer.

Unfortunately (or, maybe fortunately), as I entered production on Boomers, I had to make the decision to pause it.

On the most basic logistical level, I had to do a lot of travelling, and hotel wifi just isn’t practical for streaming unfortunately. I was also just at my limit for how much work my brain and body could take!

So, it got mothballed for a bit. But it has been something I’ve been keen to bring back for some time now.

For me, it’s really exciting for a few reasons:

Firstly, I like releasing stuff into the wild! I know some creators really love disappearing for many, many months and emerging with some epic project. But, I like sharing things with you all!

The livestream, and associated clips, thus provide a means through which I can be a bit more responsive and available to folks who watch my videos!

Secondly, it allows me to be much more responsive to current affairs events. One challenge which exists with main channel videos is that they take a long time to make. This means we’re rarely able to talk directly to day-to-day events. The livestream gives me a low-key way in which I can do that.

Finally, it allows me to “test out” potential topics for the main channel. There have been several times in the past in which I’ve talked a little bit about a certain topic on stream precisely as a means to see whether there might be the interest for a full video. And doing so has often been very successful in letting me gauge whether it’s worth pursuing a bigger project on such a topic or not.
