Going Around the Houses | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

Over the past couple of days, Georgia (my wonderful editor) and I have been out and about filming all the to-camera sections for my upcoming video about the housing crisis.

The key concept for this one was that we wanted to film all the to-camera sections in front of as many different kinds of houses as possible: high-rise apartments, mid-level flats, terraces, detached houses.

Our planning began with a few lengthy sessions staring at Google Street View.
We didn’t travel too far for this one, and decided to stick around our own city. Which came with the benefit of knowing the area pretty well. But it still took us around half a day to locate the perfect spots.

We ended up with a great mixture of long roads for walking and talking along, and distant vistas packed with patchworks of houses.

And then, on Wednesday, I packed up the car with all our filming kit, and we headed out!

It turns out nine locations is kind of a lot.

Even though some of them were only a few minutes away from one another, the logistics of unpacking, setting up, filming and then packing up again still added up.

It also doesn’t help that, whenever anyone does any filming, something will go wrong. Usually a few things.

However well you prepare, however hard you try, unexpected gremlins will crawl out the woodwork to make you slip up. Usually, just after the moment you thought you were good to go.

This time around we had it all: the gimbal playing up, wind, parking difficulties, a lost pair of scissors making it difficult to cut the edges off a printed photo I was planning on holding up…

Nevertheless, we persevered through and eventually got it done!

It ended up taking two days rather than the one we had optimistically hoped for.

But, with a bit of luck, the footage is going to look as engaging as we planned!

That, however, will ultimately be up to you to judge! I think we’ve got a great video planned, and I can’t wait to share it with you all!

More soon!

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!

Well I think the video does a decent job of covering the last 100 years or so of housing in the UK! We were lucky enough to get some great interviewees for this one which both helped me hone the video, and add a great extra ingredient to the piece!

I'm really looking forward to this one! I'm incredibly curious abt UK public housing as someone in the US, given the present housing crisis over here and more generally as an extension of a more expansive (as compared to the US) social safety net the UK built out in the post-war period
