Building a Narrative | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

This week, I’ve been putting some hard work into writing my next video.

I’ll reveal what the video is actually about in an upcoming edition of the Friday Update. But, there’s been an interesting twist to the process this time around.

In a number of my recent videos, I’ve opted to include some interviews with experts on the topics we’re exploring: the Just Stop Oil video and the bankrupt cities videos both contained interviews.

It’s been fun to add an additional string to my bow, and to be able to make my videos a bit more varied; rather than just making everyone putting up with my voice for 30-40 minutes…

For previous videos, we’ve not been able to arrange the interviews until quite deep into the process. This has meant having to work backwards a little bit to squeeze excerpts from the interview into the overall arc of the piece.

This time around, not only was I lucky enough to speak with perhaps the person who knows the most about the topic in question, but I was also able to record the video much earlier.

And this had an extra benefit.

Not only was I able to use the interview to record some great sound bites and bits of analysis to include in the video itself, it also served as a great way of recapping my own research.

It was so helpful (and fun!) to sit down with someone so knowledgeable about the topic I’ve spent the past weeks obsessing over and to be able to double check whether my interpretation of all the available data and historical turning points is correct.

More than anything, what an honour to have read someone’s work and to then get to spend some time quizzing them about it and asking follow-up questions!

What a great job I have!

I’ve already recorded some of the VO for the next video, and so we’re beginning to edit it now. But, I’ll be spending the coming weeks polishing it up, and will look forward to telling you all more very soon!

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!
