More Videos! More Often! | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

What have I been up to this week?

This week I’ve been making progress on the script for January’s video!

I don’t think I’ve mentioned yet that we’re currently in a process of trying to increase the rate at which we put out videos.

Over the past few years, I’ve broadly been on a schedule of putting out one video every two months. There have been many exceptions to this (usually involving more frequent releases!); but that’s at least been the intention.

This has partly been the result of trying to work on huge, huge projects and partly been the result of capacity—making videos just takes a long time!

With Georgia having taken editing duties off my hands, and with my having embraced the benefits of occasionally working on slightly more focused videos, my intention is to release one video per month going forward.

When we made Treason Fest last year, I found I really enjoyed releasing work on a slightly more regular basis and being able to hear what people thought! Releasing three videos that were slightly less long was just so much more rewarding!

In October, you may have noticed that we (just about) managed to release two videos in one month. We might not manage to hit that quite that cadence again for a while; but do expect to see more releases more regularly going forward!

And outside of work?

Life’s been a bit busy with some family stuff this past week or so which I won’t burden you all with. However, it would be a little false of me to pretend that everything was solely sunny uplands.

That being said, amid quite a bit of chaos, I have managed to steal a couple of nights out to the cinema with my wife which has been fun!

More on that below…

What have I been reading/watching/listening to?

On Tuesday, my wife and I went to see Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year.

It’s a long film: 153 minutes I think. And it is, in some regards, a murder (maybe?) mystery. A police procedural of sorts?

However, the film is less interested in tantalising you about why one of the characters has died than in the fall out (no pun intended) from it.

It continues to be ambiguous about the cause of death in ways that really push your moral relationship with the film and yet which feel really subtle and underplayed.

In an era where the crime drama (and its close-cousin the true crime documentary) is often a highly spectacular affair, this is a really gentle (and thus far more unnerving) piece of filmmaking.

That brings us to the end of this week’s edition of the Friday Update. I hope you’ve found it mildly insightful.

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!
