Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday(ish) Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.
We’ve been picking up the pace massively with work on the next video over the past week.
Things began fairly enthusiastically on Monday when I polished-off the final draft of the introduction to this minor epic. As I’ve mentioned in previous videos, I’ve been trying a new approach to writing where I try not to get too bogged down in perfectionism whilst writing my early draft. What’s been interesting has been that, when I’ve returned to polish each section, I’ve actually found that my “terrible” first drafts were often much better than I thought!
On Tuesday, I then filmed that introduction. After using a lot of green screen in recent videos, this one starts with some “live action” of me in my living room. Which reminds me that I’d love to get back to filming more things on location for future projects!
After an enthusiastic planning session with Georgia on Wednesday, I then set about polishing-off two further little sections for later in the video. Both of which involve a tribute to one of my favourite films by having me explain a bit of economics whilst soaking in the bath…
We’re both incredibly excited about this video. It feels both intellectually and creatively ambitious and I think it going to make for a really interesting watch. Fingers crossed things continue to go so well!

I’ve made a new enemy: my wisdom teeth. The past five days or so have required me to dose myself up on endless amounts of painkillers to stave off the discomfort of my upper-right wisdom tooth which has decided to make itself known.
I’ve never had any problems with my wisdom teeth before, so this feels like entering a new period of both maturity and pain! The dentist assured me that it should die down in a few days though so here’s hoping!

On Friday, my partner and I went to see the second instalment in the Spider-Verse trilogy.
This is the first time in a very, very long time that I’ve been to an opening night of a film. It’s not that I particularly avoid them, but my partner and I lead relatively busy lives so often end up going to the cinema last-minute and at weird times.
It was fun to see something new with an audience that was so stoked for it. It can be tempting to ridicule people who are too sincere in their enthusiasm for things. In this case, not only was it nice to see people so excited for a new release, it was also well deserved!
I’ve read the Miles Morales comics for many years and so am more invested in these films than I am in the glut of other comic book adaptations that are forced upon us. But I thought it was great. It felt like such a totalising experience in the combination of its sound design and animation and incredibly pace-y storytelling.
I’ve not particularly been on board with a lot of the comic book movie boom; but this was a real treat!

That brings us to the end of this week’s edition of the Friday(ish) Update. I hope you’ve found it mildly insightful.
Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!
