Supply Guys | The Friday (ish) Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday(ish) Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

What have I been up to this week?

Production has begun! The past week (and a bit) has seen things begin to shift from the research and writing stages to the production stage of my upcoming video about energy privatisation in Britain!

There’s still some writing to be done. But, to give our excellent editor Georgia a bit of a headstart, I’ve been filming some of the sections that I’ve already written so that they can be edited whilst I’m writing the final sections.

This has been great so far. After a couple of videos where I’ve defaulted to sitting behind my desk, we’re back to having some fun with costume! Last week, I donned a fantastic fake moustache to create some 1980s-British-pub vibes and, tonight, I’m pulling out the Karl Marx pyjama top which previously appeared in my video about the metaverse around a year ago.

I did have a minor disaster a couple of days ago when a big roll of photography paper landed on my head, so it’s not all been rosy… However, hopefully that’s the last of any accidents!

And outside of work?

Last weekend, it was a friend’s 30th birthday (I’ve got quite a lot of those lined up over the next year!). As such, my partner and I went on a long drive to his hometown around 4 hours away for a surprise birthday party. While we were looking forward to the party itself, we were both kind of dreading the drive itself.

However, about a quarter of the way into the journey, I remembered that we were going to be driving past Stonehenge (which is an extremely old stone circle monument in England). I’ve lived quite nearby for most of my life but have never been. And, luckily, my partner and I have passes which get us free entry!

So, instead of stopping for lunch at a horrible, soulless service station, we instead spent an hour or so wandering around Stonehenge and the attached exhibition. Which was pretty interesting. It was particularly intriguing how little is still known about the monument and how much of the exhibition was them admitting that. Because, when it comes to history, it’s sometimes the unknowns which capture our attention the most.

What have I been reading/watching/listening to?

I have finally, after many, many months and years of putting it off, begun watching Ghosts. I don’t know whether people outside the UK will have heard of Ghosts but it’s a BBC sitcom about a couple who move into a house occupied by ghosts. One of the couple then has an accident which then leads to them being able to see and hear those ghosts.

The behind-the-scenes backstory to the show is great. Essentially, the creators and stars of the show have worked for many years on a childrens’ educational history programme called Horrible Histories (I’ve not idea what the international reach of Horrible Histories is either!). At some point, they decided they wanted to make a show for adults. And Ghosts is the result.

It’s an incredibly silly show. But also extremely heartwarming. And my partner and I have absolutely devoured it. If you want a relatively chill but high-joke-rate comedy, I would definitely recommend it!

That brings us to the end of this week’s edition of the Friday(ish) Update. I hope you’ve found it mildly insightful.

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!
