A Christmas Special! | The Friday(ish) Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday(ish) Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

What have I been up to this week?

So, it’s been a little while since I’ve posted a Friday Update!

My deepest apologies. Unfortunately, when I have a really, really busy week, the Friday Update tends to be the thing that I have to drop to keep my work-life balance in check. And, what a busy week it’s been!

As hopefully all of you will have seen, last Friday, I released my demo latest video How the Media Promotes Transphobia. The video has, unsurprisingly, had a mixed response; but I’ve been really pleased with the response from the people’s whose opinions I actually care about! I think, as ever, there would be things I would do differently were I to make the same video again. But people seem to have got something out of it at a least!

This past week, my attention has been split in two directions:

Firstly, I’ve been working on researching my next video. It’s going to be a fun topic that’s going to act as a kind of “Christmas special” for the channel. I’ll hold off on revealing what it is until next week but I’m hoping it will manage to bring together two of my favourite aspects of making videos: pulling apart some complex political ideas and telling a good story at the same time!

Secondly, I’m currently in the process of hiring a part-time video editor. This has been something that’s been a long time coming. For a while, I’ve been really keen to bring someone on board to take more of the editing duties off my plate. This will hopefully lead to much better videos while also freeing me up to spend more time writing!

This week, then, I’ve been reading through lots of applications for the role and preparing for interviews. Bringing someone else on board is obviously a bit of a risk economically, but I’m hoping it will pay off and open the door to lots of new possibilities!

And outside of work?

This weekend, I popped to Leeds for a friend’s 30th birthday. As those of you who know a) a bit about the geography of the UK and b) that I live in the South West will know, that is a long way. So, I spent quite a bit of time squashed in the middle seat of the back of a car. We didn’t have loads of time to see Leeds itself, but we did go out for a really nice Italian meal and some drinks in the city centre. I’d definitely love to visit again and see a bit more of the city!

What have I been reading/watching/listening to?

My partner and I recently watch The Bear on Disney+ which is absolutely excellent. I’d heard great things about it before we sat down to watch it and it did not disappoint. I’ve never worked in a kitchen so I can’t judge the show against any real experience of that kind of work. However, the sense of tension the show manages to create is so stress-inducing! I would 100% recommend it to anybody!

That brings us to the end of this week’s edition of the Friday Update. I hope you’ve found it mildly insightful.

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!
