A Week of Ups and Downs | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

What have I been up to this week?

This week, I’ve come within shouting distance of finishing the script for my next video. I’ve had some real ups and downs with my feelings towards it (there was one day when I really just wanted to throw the computer out the window!) but I’ve very nearly got a completed script. I say a completed script as I think it’s going to need a bit of redrafting.

There are parts where I’m worried it’s still not quite as well structured as I like my work to be. I’d also like it to be a little shorter than it currently is! Nevertheless, I think it’s going to be an interesting exploration of “polite” transphobia (with some dunking on Daily Wire hosts to keep it fun!).

Alongside my writing, I’ve also been trying to spruce my office a little bit! I really love my home office room and feel really lucky to have such a great space. It allows me to really focus-in on writing when I’m putting scripts together. At the same time, it’s relatively large and so provides me with much more space for filming than I’ve had in the past—this means a lot less tripping over wires!

Since we moved into this house though, I’ve not done a huge amount with the space and so it’s remained very “practical”. Once I’ve packed-away the kit from filming a video, it’s a little bit bare and un-lived-in. Those of you that have watched my Director’s Commentary tracks will have seen the gorgeous bookshelves I picked up a while ago; but, outside of one very delicately-composed camera angle, it often looks a bit bleak!

So, this week, whenever I’ve found myself burnt-out on writing for the day, I’ve been trying to dedicate some time to making my office a bit nicer to be in. I’m planning on getting some pictures up on the walls and maybe a plant or two. Some of this may sound a little indulgent, but I’ve recently been exploring the option of starting a podcast, and so it would great to be able to film in this room without it looking like I’m locked in a damp basement!

And outside of work?

My weekend and evenings this week have been pretty busy with lots of family coming to visit. On Saturday, one of my cousins and her family popped-in to say hello on their way back from a holiday in Cornwall. Then, a couple of days ago, my sister and nephew also came to visit. So, I’ve been doing a lot of entertaining family!

What have I been reading/watching/listening to?

My partner was away for a lot of this week, which meant that, in the evenings, I kept finding myself habitually drawn into doing a little bit of work. In particular, I’m currently captivated by the reading for the video I’m most probably going to make after this one; and not necessarily for the right reasons… The topic I’ve stumbled upon really is quite wild and involves the opportunity to explore some really interesting philosophical ideas and some really bizarre ones!

I’m devastated not to be able to tell you what it’s about but a) I don’t want to reveal all just yet in case I change my mind and b) there are some… interesting… groups involved that I think I need to avoid finding out about this one before I get a bit closer to releasing it.

If I do go forward with it, it’s going to make for a slightly unhinged video and a fascinating story.
