Writing Continues... | The Friday Update

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Update, in which I give a little insight into what I’ve been up to for the past seven days.

What have I been up to this week?

I’m not gonna lie, this week has been fairly uneventful. I’ve spent most of the time at my desk, working away on the next video.

The writing hasn’t always gone easily. As you’ll perhaps have noticed from watching my video, a lot of my work is quite narrative-based. There’s nothing I love better than telling the “story of” a certain phenomenon. The video I’m currently working on, however, is far more analytical, and so I’m having to put a little more thought into how I ensure that it’s fun to watch!

Nevertheless, progress is going well. I’ve got a really strong draft of two of the three “main” sections to this video which is a really nice place to be in with so many weeks to go until I’m due to release this one. I’m hoping I might be able to finish a very rough draft in the next week or so. I guess we’ll all find out how optimistic that prediction is next week!

And outside of work?

This weekend I did a “Tough Mudder” obstacle race with some friends. This involved running/walking a 15km course with 30 obstacles peppered along the way. The friends that I went with have done quite a few of these events and had been trying to persuade me to go along for a while. And, this time, I finally relented!

It was a fairly tiring day and my complete lack of upper body strength meant that I wasn’t exactly flying over any of the obstacles (in fact, I had a lot of help from my team mates!). But, despite there being plenty of challenges that I would have much rather avoided (including a slide into icy water and a lot of height-related obstacles), I managed to push myself well beyond what I thought my limits were going to be.

What have I been reading/watching/listening to?

Alongside beginning to do some cursory reading for the video after next (which I’m going to keep quiet about for a little while…), this week I headed to see Thor: Love and Thunder at the cinema. Which was… fine. I drift in and out of the Marvel films, probably missing more than I manage to see. So, I wasn’t entirely up-to-date with everything that was going on. Nevertheless, it was kind of okay as a film. I didn’t think the plot was particularly engaging and it seemed to skip over a lot of stuff that felt like it should have engaged with more (I wanted to know more about Jane becoming The Mighty Thor, for example) but it was funny enough.

I feel like I’ve seen a lot of slightly bland films lately—feel free to drop me some recommendations below so that I can try and break that trend!

That brings us to the end of this week’s edition of the Friday Update. I hope you’ve found it mildly insightful.

Thanks as ever for your generous support and I’ll look forward to updating you more next week!!
