Hi all!
First off, I wanted to say a quick thanks for your generous feedback to my most recent video. And welcome to anyone who's joined the Patreon recently!
I've just uploaded the script for those at the relevant tiers and will be putting the commentary track together shortly. I'll also put a call-out for questions for a Patreon Q&A soon.
What I'm most keen to tell you about, however, is my next video which I think is going to be a lot of fun.
Some of you will be aware that we've recently seen the rise of a strange phenomenon in the form of YouTuber boxing. YouTubers including KSI and the Paul brothers have turned their attentions to the boxing ring for matches both with fellow YouTubers and, in some cases, professional boxers.
I've been really interested in how these YouTubers have used boxing in order to present themselves as being on a redemption arc and the ways in which that narrative borrows from other pre-existing boxing stories and, more broadly, the way in which boxing in positioned in our culture.
So, I'm hoping to use the phenomenon of YouTuber boxing as a hook to talk about what the stories we tell about boxing reveal about class and masculinity in the present day. I'm really excited about this one, I think it's going to be a really fun video with some really important things to say.
I've spent the past week watching lots of people getting punched in the head. I've been really enjoying the Rocky series (which I didn't think I would!) and also been catching up on the sagas of KSI and the Pauls.
Let me know if there's any boxing films/books/shows that you've enjoyed as I'm trying to make sure I engage with as much boxing-related media as possible—as the video itself begins to take shape in my head, I've been finding it really helpful to have clear examples I can point towards.
Anyway, that's all for now, I'll keep you updated as the video makes progress.
Thanks so much as ever for your generous support!!
Tom
