Update: My Next Video, Propaganda on YouTube

Hey all!

I thought I'd give you a little update on my next video, the script for which has really started to come together over the last few days and which I'll be filming shortly.

It's a slightly different style to some of my other stuff in that it's a bit more similar to a journalistic story than a deep dive into theory (although there's still A LOT of politics in it and I like to think you'll still come away with a better understanding of one particular aspect of the world around us).

We're going to be looking at propaganda and misinformation on YouTube. In particular, a creator who I'd previously enjoyed a lot of work from recently released a video in partnership with an organisation which it's slightly troubling to see someone uncritically echoing the talking points of (particularly given that this creator presents themselves as a journalist).

I'm doing my absolute best to avoid it coming across like a hit piece or a "drama" video and to, instead, use that particular event as the starting point for a broader conversation about propaganda and misinformation on YouTube and on the potential challenges that might arise for us as media and news consumers when independent journalism begins to come into contact with the "influencer economy".

I hope it's going to be an interesting little video and I'm trying to keep it slightly shorter than some of my more recent releases (although I swear I say that every month!).

Looking forward to sharing more with you shortly!

Thanks as ever for your generous support!

Tom

I'm hoping it provides an interesting vignette into one, pretty mainstream, case of propagandising on YouTube as well as providing some pointers to the wider issues. Just polishing up the script this afternoon and then filming on either Sunday or Monday!

Many people rely on YouTube for information and news. The influx of influencers and the lack of oversight in the nexus of paid advertising, personal diary stories and paid propaganda on social media is vital to address. I’m very interested in your thoughtful take on it.

Thanks! Always good to know that at least one person's looking forward to it, haha!

Can't wait :)
