Memento Part 5
Added 2021-02-25 10:15:52 +0000 UTCOk, we're back! Thank you so much everyone for your patience. I need to refrain from giving estimates as to when I'll have episodes ready, because my schedule's so unpredictable. But here we are with a new episode! Hopefully back to biweelky soon!
I really like part 5 for sort of standing alone within a single setting. I'll let you guys discover it at your own pace, but it's a slightly different take on the Memento concept in that it has a contained subject, which comes at an opportune time within what's a pretty convoluted narrative to follow. Hope you guys like it.
We don't usually have guests on the show. Originally as I developed the concept, I imagined a rotating guest chair, but I quickly realized that it would never work. Our recording sessions are long, and more importantly, signing up for a single episode may mean being committed for up to five episodes. Plus, it's a tricky show to do. I like to stick to the people who already have a feel for the format.
Memento gave me the opportunity to go back to that, book guests with the confidence that it'll be less than an hour of their time and be able to stick to that commitment. As such I got the opportunity to dig in to my rolodex and book more amazing people and see how they fit into our crazy world. I also took a few swings at guests that might work for the show, but who were not people I already knew. And one of those people . . .
We got Steve Jackson! The man, the myth, the legend. The creator of GURPS. He was wonderfully generous with his time, and injected a very different energy. There have been a ton of different levels of comfort with RPG's on the show, but everyone on it has been to some degree involved in the professional performing arts. Even Jon, who constantly evinces his mundanity, used to be an actor. But Steve Jackson is 100% of gaming stock. Heck he's the king. And as such he had a completely different approach to the show. He was incredibly meticulous, inspecting every blade of grass, taking incredibly detailed notes. Having Steve flexed a very different part of my brain in trying to DM for him. The tragedy of Steve's section is that for all his attention to detail and exceptional note-taking, he left those notes in a room that no one revisited, and as such I ended up cutting a lot of his section (he played for 90 minutes!) just to keep the story moving; since so much of his careful detective work ended up not having an impact on the future story. I tried to keep a sense of his meticulous work, while keeping the pace from dragging during his stint. I found his section incredibly unique and lovely. He created the game, and having him on will always stand out in my head as one the most special moments in the show. Hope you enjoy it.
