Toy Story Part 1
Added 2020-07-05 10:35:20 +0000 UTCAh, it's such a joy to have someone else DM. I enjoy playing and it takes so much off my plate when someone else runs the game. Plus all my other DM's are always knocking it out of the park, so it's good all way round.
There's a certain freedom and joy in having characters who are pretty useless at everything. For instance, the Wizard of Oz characters, and to a slightly lesser degree, the characters in this movie. In fact a lot of children's movie characters don't stuff the stat sheet when you look at them analytically. I think this is the key difference where people who play RPG's like games, and people who play RPG's like improv differ: There's nothing more ripe with opportunities to improv than having your character fail. The storytelling consequences of failures are often more impactful than those of successes, and as someone crafting a story from the madness, it gives you a lot to play with.
In fact I think one of the most important levers a DM has over the tone of the whole campaign is where they set the skill levels. Low skill level campaigns are going to naturally tend more towards character moments, whereas high skill level campaings are going to tend more towards being mechanical. High skill level characters just have so many more ways to impact the world around them, it starts to leave you with the feeling that RP is less efficient than just rolling the dice. Of course, both can be fun and exciting in their own ways, but the little details that make characters come to life can get lost if you elide over the RP too often.
Anyways, Toy Story is a fun one. Def one of my favorites. And it was only after listening back to prepare it for release that I noticed that most of part 1 is just Buzz and Woody scenes going back and forth, Woody subtly manipulating Buzz as begrudging respect grows between them. Love it. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as we loved playing it.
Next up is Toy Story part 2 and after that . . . well, I won't say anything quite yet.

Hearing Paulo's excellent roleplaying really made me see through the childhood-nostalgia lens of the movie and suddenly grasp how much of a huge JERK Woody is, which is honestly a testament to how well Paulo played the character's traits (as clearly excellently chosen by Joz). And Andy continues to be as entertaining as always. Another very well done episode by all!
