Friday the 13th: part 2
Added 2018-11-07 12:11:13 +0000 UTCOk we're back with the thrilling conclusion of this movie. And I gotta say, this one was really thrilling to play, I hope it was as thrilling to listen to. The genre switch definitely upped the tension at the table, and the players were stressed out when Jason was coming for them.
If there's one thing I learned about these 80's style slashers is that making the horny teenagers one-dimensional characters isn't a flaw of these films, it's a required trait. You don't want to make the audience empathize too much with the characters or the gruesome and creative kills will become sad rather than fun. What I think works in a funny (and 60% unitentional) way about this episode, is that since the players spent time reading backstories and working on their secret goals, they got into the skin of their characters enough to actually care about them, but the audience that wasn't privy to all the secrets and hasn't spent the time filling in the backstory, doesn't get enough of the characters in the two hours or so of play to make the Jason kill-spree become tragedy. Relistening, I think the episode manages to strike a careful balance, where the players kinda actually cared, but it stays in the realm of popcorn-horror for the audience. But perhaps you may disagree.
Anyway, fun episode, we'll be back in two weeks with . . . Weekend at Bernie's!

Late to the party, but I'd also like to see the character sheets for Summerspell
