Yeah, that was something I was quite curious about, as a follow-up question about the seams: How visible would they have been when the painting was first created, compared to what we see now (on, for example, this peice)?

great conversation, did not fully appreciate the difference between tacks and nails! The seams show how valuable linen was in the past. I don't know if 'painting linen' was a different quality to clothes linen. Either linen in general was valuable or painting cloth was high quality so valuable. Since seems appear to be common. Or maybe seams didn't show when first done?
