Usually, I would only make part of the ambient track in the box. I don't know…for me, ambient is just not a made-in-the-daw type genre. Of course, when making an ambient track, I would do most of the stuff in Ableton…like composing, arranging, automation and all that jazz…but when I'd be done producing, I'd record the track to tape, you know, to get "that" tape sound…oh yeah, by the way, I always use the same crappy old tape for my tape ambient tracks…and there's something special about this particular cassette…well, haha, when I was younger, there was this girl, you know, and we were crazy in love (a bit like Beyoncé and Jay-Z…just more decadent)...anyway, one day, this girl made me a mixtape. Can you believe it? However, she only used the A side…the B side was completely empty which I found a little odd at the time but hey, whatever, right? I mean hello, a girl made me a mixtape…how cool is that? Anyway, when I got into tape and learned how to use it in a musical way during the first lockdown, I found this mixtape in a box somewhere in the attic and remembered that the B side was empty…and then I was like "wait a moment! Maybe she was from the future or something and knew that I'd get into this stuff and that's why she left the B side empty!"😲🤯…and I don't know…I really liked the idea to use this tape for my music…a tape that was made by someone for a person they were in love with at a certain point in time…and I was like "hey, wouldn't it be cool if I used this tape for my ambient stuff? It'll make for a great story someday, that's for sure!"...well, and today is that day…now, put that in your pipe and smoke it, 2020-lockdown-Christian🤣 Ok, where was I? Oh yeah, I was describing the process of how I make my ambient stuff…long story short, in a nutshell: 1. make a track in Ableton…check…2. record it to tape…check…3. record it back into Ableton…check…4. try and tame a few things here and there and make it louder…done! Speaking of loudness, I usually keep my ambient tracks at around -9…-8 LUFS…ish. However, this time, as you might have guessed from the title of this video, things were a little different. I tried to keep it all in the box using just stock plugins…I have to confess that I cheated a little bit…I added one non-Ableton plugin - Valhalla's Supermassive - on the master…but it's freeware and I reckon most of you already have it anyway…if you don't know what I'm talking about here…what the heck is wrong with you🤣…go and get it immediately as it's super awesome!!! I mean it's called Supermassive, after all! You wouldn't call a plugin Supermassive if it wasn't super awesome, right?
