I don't normally read many memoirs, but this is an incredible story that I really enjoyed! Oftentimes, I couldn't put it down!
Part of the synopsis:
"Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her "head-for-the-hills bag". In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard."
She talks a lot about how we are shaped by the opinions and ideas of our parents - including her father, who has some level of undiagnosed schizophrenia or other similar mental illness. Only when she begins to educate herself, does she realise that her world-view is completely misshapen and perhaps the world isn't really ending..
Honestly, I really enjoyed it. I'll be thinking about this one for awhile, that's for sure!
