Another film I've watched recently during my Old Film Night is La Notte. Another film from 1961 but from a different part of the world with very different themes. No matter where you are in your life, I think you can recognise the internal conflicts the characters face.

While there's lots of scenes where not much is happening, this film is gorgeous. The lighting, the camera angles, the layout of the characters... everything relates to something deeper.

If you want to watch a British film with a good dose of 'kitchen sink realism' you should look up 'A Taste of Honey', which was released in 1961 too. Themes of Interracial relationships, homosexuality and teen pregnancy made it quite controversial for its time. I watched it a few years ago when I found out it influenced some of my favourite music from the '80's.

Actually just watched Bicycle Thieves!

Fellinis Roma, strange mix of real life and acting, it kept me watching to the end.

You might like the cult film 'Blow-Up' from the same director - it's set in London! For other Italian films I would maybe look at Italian neo-realism. Films like Paisan, Bicycle Thieves, Rome Open City, or La Strada. Actually La Strada's one of my favourite films of all time. Keep these Old Film Night posts coming, they're cool.
