The reason I downloaded Cockatrice (a free 3rd party Mtg app) was in fact because Mtga was newer. It didn't have any of the Mirrodin cards, so I couldn't build a Myr deck I was working on. I've since printed proxies and I'm cutting them out as I watch this video.

Thats-amigos

i am very new to magic, my first starter deck was from bloomborrow and i loved the art so much i bought the booster box set but have no idea what to do with all these cards. my starter decks are also alright, they certainly don't hold up to more experienced player decks. i'd like to beef up my starter decks because that feels the easiest point of entry to deck building but it's still super overwhelming

Sarah Willey

They used to both, be better about supporting Standard, and used to have viewing areas at the old Grand Prix tournaments.

Brian Lester

They've only very recently started to care about supporting standard again. They still see Commander as the biggest money maker but as Foundations and these other initiatives continue maybe they will get back to the old style of supporting standard but even expecting them to be on par in terms of doing what Pokemon does giving you codes with every pack and such is a pipe dream unfortunately when they know they can make more money elsewhere.

Arena is really good for the basics of learning to play the game and drafting, even for free. There are loads of articles of how to play on a budget. Cubes are really the late stage for after you've learned the game and know what archetypes and strategies you want to feature in your cube. The easiest way to make a "cube" is a set cube. Basically just sleeving up an entire booster box keeping the packs together and drafting them over again. Then you can try your hand at getting more packs and crafting the box into more of a regular cube. The Professor @ Tolarian Community College had some good videos on cube if that's the route you would even like to go down as well as many other videos and guides from various people on cubes as it's the easiest long term way to play MTG as a board game sort of drafting experience.

Brian Lester

So if you're drafting you typically need 24 packs for an 8 person pod. There are ways to play with less than 8 people, 6 is popular. You'll just have to Google MTG Draft rules for X people. Even numbers work better. But it's also different now that they are Play boosters which are different from the booster packs of old. As for lands, the easiest/cheapest way (if you only have access to WotC's products) would be to get that starter collection product from Foundations, I believe it comes with a good amount of land. If you have aocal game store near you or if you look online, maybe eBay, although places like Cool stuff Inc, Card kingdom, lots of online game stores have bundles of lands. You usually play 17 land in your 40 card draft deck, most decks will be 2 or more colors, and likely no more than half the pod will be in the same colors. I'm sure there places online articles that could tell you how many basic lands to have on hand. But look basic lands are VERY common and cheap. People give them away constantly. So really a game store could probably sell you a boat load for very cheap. If you don't have an LGS and don't wanna get the Foundations starter collection box, Bundles are the only product that have basic lands in significant numbers. Usually 80 per bundle. So worst case scenario you'd wanna buy like 3 bundles? And you'd have the number of booster packs you'd need to draft a pod of 8. TLDR game stores and online places sellots of bulk land for cheap. That's your best bet. I'm sure there have to be guides out there that detail how to draft your basic pod of 8, and there used to be guides for less people, but with the switch to Play Boosters over draft boosters your mileage may very going less than 8 people. I hope this helped at all. Sorry for the rambling.

Brian Lester

Yeah commander is the it format they support with lrecins anymore. We used to have Standard and Pioneer Challenger decks. And modern versions of those old themes decks. 60 card kitchen table decks.

Brian Lester

It's very amusing to see Jarvis's journey through the stages of the game like we used to back in the day. Except the difference is that for a while WotC abandoned standard pre pandemic and is only just now starting to reinvigorate it. It's disappointing that newer players like yourselves realize that sets like Kaladesh are cool as hell, that's the MTG lore we want to keep seeing and that they're moving away from. Like you said MTGs fantasy has never been boring bland fantasy like LotR. It's always been cool and quirky and thats why we like it. We're not trying to gate keep, we're mourning the loss of a really cool aspect about the game.

Brian Lester

I think he's referring to Limited Resources with Marshall Sutcliffe and LSV.

I really want to do a magic draft night with some friends but have only played arena. I'm not sure how to efficiently get enough cards/lands to make it possible as I don't own any magic cards yet. As someone who has hosted draft nights how do you go about getting everything you need/buying enough lands. I haven't had much luck on forums getting information and could use advice.

Christian Smith

Hey Jarvis, any chance you could give the name of that podcast you were talking about? It sounds interesting

Kaden Jorgensen

I’ve also been wanting to get into draft but sinking money into arena just to start practicing is a big turn off. Do you guys think cubes are a good alternative?

Jackson.exe

Y’all got me to fully go down the mtg rabbit hole and I’m dragging my friends with me. We just started playing commander weekly and I built my first deck! Arena really does have a great tutorial. Also coming from Pokemon I fully agree on the paper to arena relationship being disappointing

It really is weird to me as a long time magic player how little wizards seems to care about giving us good, competitively viable precons for non commander formats. Basically every other big card game out there does it - and the few times magic would print them they'd always intentionally hamper the decklist by adding filler so you were still required to get more singles or open more if you wanted to make the deck competent. Especially at a time where wizards is trying to make the game more accessible to new players! Going to a store, buying a precon, and then playing that format is such a smaller hurdle than googling decklists, learning legalities, ordering singles, etc!

Briar

So many thoughts about UB and MTG. I guess for me thing for me that annoys me is the number of sets, and the number of UB sets. As you mentioned the cool ting with magic is that multiple kind of fiction cohabits. A lot of original work. Great to have some alternative to Disney/Marvel. I love my LOTR commander deck as a LOTR and magic fan. It is great other people can also enjoy the game with other fictional worlds. Really, the volume of UB is my main issue. I am also worried that people coming thanks to UB might be discouraged and burn out very quickly because of the rhythm and diversity of sets. Anyway, it is partially thanks to you I am back playing MTG, can't wait to play more of it, really looking forward to watch Um Actually! Edit: about learning the game and getting people into it, I really like the pauper format as a 60 cards format, much lower price of entry. Edit2: Nevermind, you mentioned pauper. Love the rats!

Jean Manguy

All the "remaster" sets are simply reprints of cards from that plane/set. Their legality doesn't change, it just makes certain cards more accessible and creates new arts of already high cost/demand cards (like the OG eddy markov card alts). This is also why ya don't see folks talking them up as much, since they don't bring any change to existing metas.

Briar

Wanna drop that 4 hour reviewing every card in a set podcast ?

Dakota

Anyone else get Bayle vibes from the second art of Rite of the Dragoncaller? With all the red lightning and stuff? I think it looks sick

Garrett Odom

hello! i find the 4 cards of the same type in standard/60 card decks impossible for the amount of cards i buy. so even when i wanted to make 60 card decks i made my own singleton decks so i could make decks with cards on hand to have a 1v1 option when its not commander time. so even tho im in the statistic of getting back in the magic within the last 2-3 years, im still intimidated by standard. ok thanks fun info and perspectives!

Jarvis this is the magic moment not the GUN SHOW

i'm not as knowledgeable about the pokemon tcg side of things so i can't really speak to that, but it's very interesting to hear you talk about some of the issues magic has with getting players interested in the competitive scene because pokemon vgc has similar problems. the barrier to entry for mainline game fans into competitive has been just crazy high for a really long time. only recently has it seemed like the pokemon company has been interested in actual growth for the scene (or even just not shooting themselves in the foot lol.) also super wild to hear there's no official area to sit and watch the competition tho at magic con, that seems like a massive oversight?? like some of the best parts of pokemon regionals / internats / worlds is getting to be in the crowd watching the games happen in front of you...
