Magic Moment #3 - "Commander Bans"

Should they repeal the ban?
Should Sol Ring also be banned?

Magic Moment #3 - "Commander Bans"

Comments

I'm for the ban. The "Pay to Win" aspect of these cards is my main reason why. Few players can afford these cards and someone having them in their deck gives them a significant advantage. In addition to being artificially scarceby design, their high utility lead people to hording them for the speculative value. So even fewer were being used to actually play with. Hasbro/WOTC won't allow those considerations mentioned as a reason for the ban though so that's why some of the justifications given come across as contrived or not perfectly logical. Sol Ring is a $1.40 card and can be easily obtained so it's less important to ban. Love you boys! Keep up the fun side quest while it holds your interest 👍

Recently I've been finding playing goad or politics themed decks can help facilitate the social element of EDH when playing against randos at my shop!

Just wanted to say that I showed my partner (recent MTG enthusiast) that Jarvis had a MTG Pocket Player's Guide from 1994 and days later, a 1994 MTG Pocket Player's Guide showed up on our doorstep lol

I literally don’t understand most of anything you guys are saying but there’s something so fun about listening to drama for a hobby you’re not involved in at all.

Hell yeah! I pulled the showcase foil Valgavoth as well, it's such a beautiful card Personally, I only bought a Dockside this month and that hurt, but I don't care about the 'value' at all, nobody should be playing stonks with pieces of cardboard and frankly if a bunch of speculators lost money honestly, good. The problem for me is the trust issues raised by how it was enacted and how long it took. It should not have taken 5 years to do this unless WotC actively interfered, the rules committee are supposedly independent but I think that idea is in tatters now. Ultimately this is Wizards fault for printing these cards in the first place and keeping them at extreme rarity for 'reprint equity' and I can only speculate that they used their influence to 'convince' the rules committee not to do this until at least after Commander Masters. So while I disagree with the ban, I don't really mind. And I blame wizards for these cardboard rectangles being these prices in the first place. Cards should be printed enough that they never ever reach this price. However, it does mean I'll never buy expensive commander cards now because if the rules committee can't be consistent or timely with bans then who knows what will get banned and when. So I'll be leaning harder into proxying than I was before, and I already lean pretty hard into proxying. And yes, by their own logic and admission Sol Ring should be banned. Most of all though I'm just tired of gamer-brained idiots harassing people every time something like this happens, don't do that. Nobody should do that and nobody should have to put up with it :\ it sucks.

Heavily relate to Anastasia’s hesitance to hop on the Magic train. TCGs are dope but Magic feels like the one piece of the format with the lack of ease in entry. (Not saying that’s how they feel, but it’s definitely hard to start with so much info to consume)

CEDH player here so invested in the cards and what not, hurts to see cards leave the format even as Korvold player but I think I'm with the community in saying this is probably the most exciting cedh has been in a while maybe since underground breach and the first few decks building around it. Turns being slower might help stax come back while allowing for more enchantment and artifacts decks thrive, maybe going back to 3 coloured pip commanders might see a rise. I think we just needed a change in meta and unlike some people who think that this will be the time cedh and edh will split, I don't see it. If it had happened it would have happened years ago. Love the MTG content kings!

Until there is an easy way to chart power levels, we need to have a points system like Canadian Highlander the format does. That can then be the purpose of the RC. They would be the ones assigning points and evaluating each card. Players are bad at evaluating their power level, and there needs to be some standard when you don't know your opponents. Wizards is also the most to blame when thinking about the monetary value of cards, which I just don't understand the concept of people wanting their cardboard to hold or gain value. It's just a fundamental disconnect that I can't get past especially when it's a game more than a collectible. Collectible stuff that you don't play a game with or anything makes even less sense to me.

(Apologies for the upcoming essay, I swear I'll try to keep it as brief as possible. Can't get hired for game design so might as well do something with this degree lmao.) I have two opinions on this, and both of them have to do with how WOTC fucked over both Commander the format and the Commander Rules Committee. Firstly, I will preface this by saying I do agree with the bans. While the difference between zero mana ramp and one mana ramp probably seems small, the amount of value accumulated over the course of a game just by being a card or two ahead is huge. For example, needing to tap one mana to play a Sol Ring vs. tapping zero mana to play a Mana Crypt allows for you to build a board stronger than otherwise possible, and then being able to play a 3-4 cost commander on turn one thanks to Jeweled Lotus can put you so far in the lead that anyone who doesnt hit their mana acceleration kind of just loses on the spot. As for why I think this is WOTC (the business, not the designers) fault. First, as nice as precons and easy access to commander is, Wizards printing any amount of products to support the Commander format was an instant red flag. It gives them way too much power and control over a format they are supposed to have little to no say in, and puts the Rules Committee in impossible situations. When WOTC showed off Jeweled Lotus, I would not be surprised if at least half the Rules Committee thought about banning it before it even came out. However, unlike when the Rules Committee banned Companion cards before they were released, these were being printed directly to Commander, so to ban them before they were released would have drawn the wrath of WOTC and they would have been disbanded on the spot. Second, Wizards intentionally choosing to make cards like Mana Crypt chase rares and Jeweled Lotus a commander-only card, while putting a card like Sol Ring in every pre-con shows exactly where their thoughts lie: profit. Commander is just another format for them to pump and dump when it feels like it has lost its value/has gotten "out of hand." WOTC could be putting Jeweled, Crypt and Sol Ring in every precon if they wanted, but they know it would make the precons incredibly busted. (Which, if they already know that, you'd think they'd know better than to print it. But again, profit.) All of this to say, these bans were good, but should have never been necessary because WOTC knew the shitstorm they were releasing into the world by printing/reprinting these cards. Fuck corporate greed :)

I think the take I've heard that I still agree with most since it's the most accurate to my experience even at my LGS is to just let the players sort it out at the table. Some pods like having high power cards and I don't even mean cEDH, some prefer keeping it much lower power. It's much harder to convince someone to rule zero in a banned card than rule zero out a card that isn't banned, so deciding that fast mana isn't allowed for everyone feels weird. (Not really a fan of the money argument either, but it doesn't affect me since I go to a very proxy friendly store.) Edit: Also this isn't to say no cards should be banned because obviously cards like Karakas (which lets you get rid of commanders way too easily and repeatably) should probably just not touch any table.

I feel insane when I see people upset because their collection lost value. Having to rework your deck I totally get is annoying and if you only play commander now it’s harder to offload those cards but if you are looking at a card game as an investment and expecting it to never fluctuate ????

starsleeps

sol ring is okay but in my opinion, dark ritual needs to join these. I have seen turn 2 wins with dark ritual in supposedly non competitive pod

I will always remember where I was when this banned list dropped. I found out about dockside first and then finding out about lotus and crypt was like a second tower has hit the meta

JARVIS I STARTED PLAYING MAGIC ARENA. I played in person with my ex years ago so I know the basics but yall got me back into it. Now I'm in like, bronze three tier and I'm not great but I'm having fun!
