As someone who grew up being obsessed with Dragon Quest and Pokemon, I never even thought to compare the monsters. People are trippin lol.

If I know anything as an artist with lots of artist friends... Making something that is the most likely to sell is the often the opposite of the art we end up making or enjoy making. This man is confusing artists with designers and marketers, just people who make a product. Fine art vs commercial art. He sounds like he doesn't actually know what an artist is lol. Most artists make something first and foremost for themselves, and they put it out in the world to connect with others. Finding your niche and finding a market is all secondary to that. People don't get into art to make money and sell a product. If they wanted to do that they'd go into another industry. I've personally seen the most AI concern among smaller fine artists, with questions about the integrity of companies using their art to train AI and therefore lack of platforms to show work on making the struggle to gain any views and interest harder, and the eternal human debate of "what is art?" Comercial arts people I know are more interested in workflow optimization and "well, actually..."ing it all. It's all tech industry coded. Though tbf, I live in San Francisco so artists vs tech bros is a fact of life.

LITERALLY!

Jarvis' interaction with that twitter weirdo is why I deleted the app years ago. It's so infuriating to try to have civil discourse with people and always get the whole rigamarole of someone making random inflammatory statements and then pulling the "I don't care actually and you lost because yOu cArE lol" move. It makes my brain go owie

It says a lot about how great this pod is, when I dont play any games at all, know very very little about them, and still absolutely loved this ep

Eloise Fraser-Hurley

oh god, nothing like 2 hours of an in depth review of something i’ve never heard about to help me do housework! thank you for unintentionally body doubling with me 🤗

[WTYP voice] Welcome to Sad Boyz Nights, a podcast about feelings and other things. With slides.

Phogul

was listening to this at a coffee shop and i had to go home because it made me want to play the violet dlc lol

Sophie P

I just spent two weeks trying to research the background of a character in a ballad so I appreciate so so much the addressing of random hyperfixations. Super fun ep, y’all.

DM Fangorn

Omg that person arguing at you on Twitter was so annoying!!! They wouldn’t stop yapping and then said “you just won’t stop tweeting” LORD!!🤦‍♀️

Lillian Cloudwing

love a game boyz moment! i really enjoy hearing yalls takes on this kind of thing. would love to hear yall talk about video game stuff more in the future especially because it seems to be a big interest for both of you

Now as a non Pokémon fan, if you showed me a design me Palworld, I would think it was a Pokémon. But if you showed me a design from DragonQuest, I would not think it’s a Pokémon. Yeah the post is right in pointing out that the creature designs are similar, but like Jordan said, you can only go so far from the source inspiration and still have it look recognizable as the source inspiration. Creatures designed from crabs are gonna look like crabs, caterpillars are gonna look like caterpillars, and bats like bats. At least with DragonQuest and Pokémon, they use different coloring choices or patterns. Palworld looks TOO much like Pokémon to pass as designs from the same inspiration. Another thing is that DragonQuest’s and Pokémon’s similar designs look like they were inspired from the same real life source, but Palworld’s designs look like they were inspired by Pokémon. Either way, Pokemon is so much bigger and more recognizable to modern audiences than DragonQuest is that if Pokémon really was a rip off, it obviously did something different enough that made the designs more appealing to people. Palworld seeming took Pokémon and made it worse. Defending Palworld from people claiming it’s similar to Pokemon is, at least, just as bad as defending a multibillion dollar company. At the end of the day, Nintendo is so hard handed about illegal use of their products that if they thought Palworld was a issue they would have done something about it, and as far as I know they haven’t. So I guess just don’t play the game if you think it’s AI generated or plagiarized from Pokemon, and forget about it. The more people complain about Palworld the more attention it gets. Let the game die unsuccessful, and hope it inspires the company to make something fully original.

Vynnie

Omg long main episode AND 2 hour bonus? You spoil us I'm spoiled

Deanna

Yeah palword… Don’t like the idea of shooting and killing “Pals.” The game seems fun but I just can’t get over that fact.😅

Joob

i dont think "delusional conspiracy theories" is really the right way to describe concerns from the public about ip theft. if people are concerned then it's worth talking about. i dont see why people can't discuss things just because they arent directly involved with it legally

Gianna

2 hrs!!!! A 2 hr long night ep is so exciting

Vynnie

Everyone's talking about how Palworld is ripping off Pokemon. The asset flipping I saw from the trailer is from Fortnite. The glider is just a straight rip, including the animations of swaying back and forth.

Sorry for multiple comments, but you mentioned triple A companies thinking they might get away with using AI voice acting in their games. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, as brilliant of a game as it is, uses a very popular text-to-speech voice for a character. It was super offputting and felt like.... should we really be using text to speech rather than paying a human to do it? This is Ubisoft, they shouldn't be cutting corners on stuff like that.

Whotio

Idk I'm just not playing palworld bc I booted it up and very basic features were broken, like reorienting structures and whatnot. It reminds me of Ark's launch, and that game turned out great. The discourse is fun and interesting but I'm probably not gonna play it again until it's out of early access.

Whotio

Watching this while playing palworld is kinda a vibe

JibbyBoyThicc

I think the legit only worry/issue i have with Palworld is that there are literal humanoid, like actually look like humans, basically a Team Rocket analog, that you can capture and then sell to a vendor. I don't believe you can have these 'pals' work for you like the animalistic ones but that needs to change pretty immediately.

Today, I learned that my childhood bestie (we are 28 years deep) loves you both and refers to you as “such good eggs”. That gave me a little heart-smile. I got to learn something new about one of my favorite humans, and had the opportunity to share with her the good feelings y’all bring. Awesome Saturday in my book ❤️

Great episode boys! I bought Palworld two or three days after it was released on steam. My best friend sent me the release trailer and said "lol have u seen Pokemon with guns" and within the hour we had both purchased it. We've both been life-long fans of the series (we still argue over who is going to buy which game version so we can trade exclusives) and while I knew there were some overlaps, I really hadn't seen the discourse over how similar some of the assets are 😅 I feel like the timing of Palworld's release was also a big factor in why we decided to get the game, S&V's dlc was kind of meh for both of us, and with no big Pokemon release this year it really seems to fill the gap. Anyways this was long and rambly, but again great main episode and nights this week!

Emily Matzke

Enjoyed the pod, this plus the hank green and musicians pod helped me clean my room this afternoon.

Just make a gaming podcast already. loved the MGS talk, need more

Colin Tevis

Gotta say, I LOVE the shirt Jarvis is wearing. Whatever that material is looks amazing.

Cyan

lmao I should have just used a notepad and then typed it out at the end.

guy persson

got a bizarre sort of fascination out of watching the multiple edits this comment got over the course of a few hours, never seen such a thing in real time before

Dylan Roy

banger. love a hyperfocus presentation and discussion!

Beth Straubel

Great episodes today boys. Thanks for being the mixed representation we deserve.

Vaughn Wright

i love the random shadowheart reference as im watching this while playing baldurs gate. also had no idea about any of this pal world stuff so it was really interesting

Naima

Rohey

Happy sad boyz day to all who celebrate

Gwendo

babe wake up jarvis is nerding out for hours again!

Rohey

Even as someone who doesn't personally have a visceral aversion to hearing the c-word, I was disappointed to look at my screen and find slime didn't actually use the phrase "said it like a bundt cake" because that is my new favorite insult. I now want to call people bundt cakes more often.

Dylan Roy

Around 25:00 that wasn't images generated by the Palworld dev. He was commenting on someone else's generated images. The whole discourse is in bad faith. Full disclosure: I do care about plagiarism and theft of assets. For example, I condemned the developer of Dark and Darker who blatantly stole the source code from his employer. But at the end of the day what matters is whether Nintendo/PokemonCompany/courts consider it to be infringement. Since Nintendo has had years to file suit and the Japanese legal system is even more strict on copyright than normal (the game passed legal review), the delusional conspiracy theories are pointless.

guy persson

twitter bro cried himself to sleep that night for sure

Gabi

This topic choice is hysterical to me because I just bought Super Mario Sunshine for a little nostalgia pickup and I was playing it while listening to the episode.

Bluebird

I love how this starts I feel like I just got picked up like a mii and got wiggled over and dropped into this conversation😂
