I love giving meaningful compliments and have frequently complimented POC folks on their hair (NEVER asking to touch, of course). I’ve learned some of the different terminology to feed my curiosity. After moving from Chicago to a much less diverse area, I worry my compliments give that negative impression/exoticization. My hope is that it leans more ally-coded. Awkward social anxiety/neurodiversity can cloud things sometimes. And just because your hair isn’t done in the way you think looks good or your shoes aren’t perfect doesn’t mean someone won’t find them striking/attractive.
