04 Art Direction, lighting concepts and tips

Hello Patrons!

This month we are diving into Art Direction and lighting. I wanted to take a step back and look at more of a higher level concept by breaking down some images and seeing what makes the lighting and composition work. We also go a bit into Cinema4D and Redshift for some tips.

Hope you enjoy and thank you for being here!

Thank you Daniel! Next video is going to be all about rendering, materials and lighting! 🙏

This was awesome! I'd love to see the compositing part of this!

Daniel Ascanio

Thank you Ben! I'm glad you like the content and look forward to seeing you around here more! ✌️

Jesus Suarez

That's super helpful, thanks for sharing. Your content is super well structured and you've got a great natural delivery - looking forward to your next tutorial!

Ben H

Thanks Ben! I usually start with a 90mm and adjust from there. Anything under 85mm I found gives me a bit of distortion on the edges so I usually go for a longer lens. I tend to stay within the 90-135mm range.

Jesus Suarez

Love the camera framing too on this one - what focal length do you recommend for an interior scene like this - I've found 40mm works well but there's a sweet-spot that I haven't found yet.

Ben H

Yes it is helpful. I am praticing studio lighting this week, I need to work more on those types of scenes. As a request I would love to see more lighting breakdown for different type of scenes like surreal scenes or still life. Thanks for all Jesus, I am really happy of your patreon content.

Olivier Beaugrand

Hope it was helpful and valuable Olivier! Any questions or requests let me know

Jesus Suarez

Thanks for this course. It was really interesting.

Olivier Beaugrand

Nice! Yeah with a crypto you get a matte for everything but for specific stuff i usually do puzzlemattes. Takes a bit more to set up but definitely worth it. Thanks for the support!!✌️

Jesus Suarez

I was getting some issues where the crypto wouldn’t load but no issues since updating Ae. Nice tip! I didn’t know that and puzzlemattes are probably much smaller in memory use. I’m working on a personal project atm so grateful for the tutorial as I’m implementing some tips, will tag you on Insta when it’s done.

Monkey Fungus

Yup! Although I've found puzzlemattes sometimes work better because you also get their reflection/refraction vs just a matte with DOF. Ae has implemented cryptomattes and I haven't found any issues with thay either but obviously there's other "adobe" issues with AE 🙃

Jesus Suarez

Yeah I haven’t worked with a client who uses it yet so it’ll be interesting to see if Fusion becomes more popular. Cryptomattes are the main thing I use in post, game changer for me.

Monkey Fungus

I may do something in the future although like I said I'm not big on post production, usually try to get as final in camera as possible. I use After Effects yes mainly because most of the clients I work with use AE. I tried Fusion for a bit and while it's very powerful I couldn't justify implementing it in my workflow.

Jesus Suarez

Yes, would love to see your compositing. Do you use after effects? I'm testing out fusion atm.
