Shiki: An Exploration of Horror in Anime

Good afternoon everyone!

It’s done!!! Here it is: Shiki: An Exploration of Horror in Anime. I never expected when setting out on this project for it to become one of my biggest undertakings of my time on YouTube so far, it's been quite the journey. It’s somewhat similar in approach to How Higurashi Scares Us though with less of the scope, and it’s the video that’s taken me the longest and arguably the most effort after that one. I’m really proud of how it turned out, particularly the editing, and I really hope you all enjoy(?) it.

I’m always conscious of my channel becoming too same-y and you can probably all tell I’m somebody who tries to have quite a positive outlook on life, and who tries to be hopeful about the uglier parts of it. I didn’t necessarily set out intending for this video to be all doom and gloom (and I hope it’s a lot more than just that), but it wasn’t only a good reset for the channel to produce something more somber in tone -- I also think it was quite therapeutic for me to make this video. It challenged me both creatively and personally and I always feel very fortunate to have found a hobby that allows me that. I’m also grateful to those of you who voted for it as while it was a video I knew I absolutely wanted to make, it wasn’t one I was especially motivated or excited to get to and I wasn’t honestly expecting it to be chosen over Sound! Euphonium. I’m really liking this poll set-up so far as it definitely helps to keep things fresh for both me and (I hope) yourselves, and to keep me in tune with what you would most like to see. I honestly have no idea how this video is going to perform, but I’m happy knowing there are people here who wanted to see it, and that there are probably others subbed to me who will be excited when they see it too, if that’s anything to go by. One last huge thank you for your patience throughout this project -- making this video alongside such a busy academic period was a challenge to say the least, but I don’t regret it one bit.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the video -- I usually have a vague idea of what kind of experience I’m going for, but less so with this one. I'm curious to hear what kinds of things it makes people think and feel.

As per, I have uni work to be catching up on, so I’ll be focusing on that for at least the rest of the week. I’ll post the monthly podcast and an updates post regarding the next video sometime before the end of June. ’Til then!

P.S. I'm still cleaning up the closed captions on the video but they're there if anybody wants to make use of them!

Thank you so much Kat! It's great to hear an opinion from somebody who hasn't seen the show, and I would be really happy if the video enhances the experience at all for people going into the series for the first time after watching it. I also love video essays for that reason and I personally think it trumps the arguable loss of certain things being spoiled, so hopefully others who haven't seen the show will give the video a chance. There is amazingly still a lot I cut out in spite of its length so I'm also looking forward to eventually making the podcast! And the soundtrack is indeed absolutely stunning and was perhaps the most enjoyable to edit with of all my videos so far (which is a very high bar).

I haven’t watched Shiki, but I still really enjoyed the video! You made good use of the soundtrack, some of those songs are just so spooky and emotional at the same time- i love them :’)). This really peaked my interest in the series too, and I want to give it a watch sometime this summer (when we’re all suffering in between Sotsu episodes). I think people like me, who get into the series after seeing your video, will actually benefit a lot from the analysis and context you set up for us. So yeah this video was definitely worth the wait, the hard work you put into it really shows! (Also rly looking forward to hearing the eventual podcast on this video after reading the description!)
