1973 WAS JUST CRAZY!!!
Comments
Notice the power shift in Louis. He makes Armand hold the umbrella for him. Thus becoming the more dominate in the relationship. Often mirroring Lestat on his manipulations.

A lot of Louis' "emotional upchuck" in the first interview is lifted straight from the first book - they find a lot of ways to incorporate lines from the novel like that! Louis calling Daniel "boy," for example, is not just because he is detached from his own humanity at that point and using distancing language. In the first book, Daniel never gets a name - he's just "the boy."

Episode five, my beloved - I'm pretty sure that I've got this one memorised. One of my favourite things I've seen in years, let me tell you.
So! The three actors in the San Francisco portion all have backgrounds in the London theatre scene, and the episode was very much shot like a play - in order, really letting the actors move through the set, improvising bits here and there. When Daniel gets knocked out and Louis and Armand are talking in the other room, that actor stayed on the floor the whole time. They even got Sam Reid to come in and say his psychic messaging lines off-camera.
Also, that was the first thing they filmed coming back to season two. Assad Zaman (Armand) didn't have too much to do in season one yet, so he was very nervous coming into this episode. He has talked about sitting on his own, listening to music to get in the zone, freaking out and trying to come up with ways to get out of having to do it - I get the impression that he's an anxious person as a rule, and the pressure really got to him.
Also also, after that "horns honking, you do not move" speech the actor who played Daniel actually had to take a moment and cry for a bit. I don't blame him.
Spec-ta-cu-lar.

The eyes are indeed contacts - the actors can't see well through them, so moving around the way they do must have taken some adjustment. They have different ones for different moods - large pupils when they're angry, smaller pupils for when they're scared. The same goes for the fangs - they have fangs in different sizes depending on the context.

Commenting as I go:
I'm pretty sure Ben Daniels improvised "tender can turn to tinder," but I could be misremembering - citation needed. Apparently he was a real gremlin (affectionate) on set because he never does the same thing twice and loves to improvise. He had a whole backstory worked out for Santiago, sent pictures of McQueen and Vivienne Westwood to the costume designer when she was working on his wardrobe, and he was the one who wanted to bleach his hair for the role. He's a fantastic theatre actor and has been in a ton of period dramas, which is how I first learned about him. Hugely underrated! His partner actually passed away last year, so he didn't do any press for Interview at the time.
