It was a compelling movie, surprised that Efron did not get considered for an Oscar since previously Mickey Rourke got nominated for The Wrestler.

Oh, and a lot of my "did you know?" source was my husband who has some freakish steel trap of a mind that remembers two things without fail: The exact lyrics, band name, a few fun facts, and sound of every friggin song he's ever heard....and wrestling from 1980-1995. It's his passion. And I get to listen to it, I guess! lol ;)

I've refined this comment over time and a few rewatches, lol! Since you asked for insight from the real story, reality is actually even sadder...there was a 6th brother... So, Jack Jr passed when he was 6, in 1959. Only look up what exactly happened to him if you're mentally prepared... The others David (d.1984), Mike (d.1987), Kerry (d.1993) happened pretty much as it was shown. Chris, the 6th brother, passed away in 1991 in much the same way as Kerry eventually did..
David did die in Japan but it was (and idk if it still is...someone will have to concur with me on this...) rumored that the ruptured intestine story was a cover for an overdose or something similar. But they kept the official story here...which I'm more than fine with even if it's not true...which, again, it could be. The fact of the matter is that David's death started a fall of dominoes which is almost too hard to believe unless you knew it all was real...no matter how exactly he actually died.
Kerry really did wear a prosthetic to wrestle (though, it wasnt his entire foot he lost, he still had his heel, but still!) And really hid it for years. Folks suspected something was up because he'd reportedly shower with his boots on in locker rooms but the public didn't know for sure until his death in '93. So, it really was just...a terrible tragedy.
That press conference with Mike after he woke up from his coma was also sadly pretty accurate. I was just a baby when it happened, but I remember seeing clips of it after he died and you can find pieces of them online, too. It's very sad to watch. That boy should have NEVER been in front of cameras in his state, but he was put out there almost from right after he woke up, skinny and not quite there.
Kevin really is the only Von Erich brother still alive and he's doing fantastically well by all appearances. He also, reportedly, enjoyed the movie. Though, he did take issue with the harsh portrayal of his father, its hard to argue that he was wholly innocent either. If you want to know more, the wrestling docuseries "The Dark Side of the Ring" did an episode on the Von Erichs, and you'll get as much of the real story as it's publicly known from that! Thank you for the enjoyable morning movie!!
