The “Right of Conquest” was rightfully relegated to the dustbin of history after WW2. We do not teach our children that “might makes right” any longer. A war of aggression, one that takes territory by force, was codified into international law as the ultimate crime by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, in rendering judgment against Nazi Germany: "War is essentially an evil thing. Its consequences are not confined to the belligerent states alone, but affect the whole world. To initiate a war of aggression, therefore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." The Golan Heights belong to Syria, and Israel continuing to occupy this territory after taking it by force, expelling 90% of the original population, settling it, and now claiming it, against multiple United Nations resolutions, represents a war crime, not a “right of conquest”. Aggression cannot be masked by calling it a defensive necessity. Aggression cannot be justified by any claim of “Manifest Destiny”, or prophecy, by any race or people. These are all concepts that have no place in the modern world. The original Syrian inhabitants did not vote to become part of Israel; they were not given any choice or voice in the matter. Most remain refugees to this day. The United States, by formally recognizing Israel’s claim, is now complicit in another war crime. The United States has no business rendering any independent judgment on this issue. We should strengthen the order implicit in International Law, not weaken it by making a mockery of everything learned from WWII. Max Licher
