After our epic safari at Kruger Shalati last year (seriously, still dreaming of those sunset views 🦁🌅), we hopped on a quick flight to Cape Town! And let us just say, when people ask about our favorite gay travel destinations, Cape Town easily lands in our top 5!
With its stunning scenery, vibrant culture, and warm, welcoming locals, it’s no wonder we’re already dreaming about returning for a longer stay.
For when to go, Cape Town’s summer is happening now (aka, North American and European winter), so it’s the perfect time to escape the cold and soak up that sizzling South African sunshine. ☀️
The Gayborhood Vibes
We based ourselves in De Waterkant, the heart of Cape Town’s gayborhood, known for its friendly vibe and colorful charm. One of the best parts? The Pink Route, marked by—you guessed it—a pink strip that guides you to the best gay bars and clubs.
Here are a few of our favorites:
🌈 Manhattan – A classic, iconic venue that’s a go-to any time—day or night.
🌈 Beefcakes – Perfect for dinner and a fabulous drag show to kickstart your evening.
🌈 Pink Candy – The ultimate gay club where you can dance the night away.
We loved how easy it was to meet people, whether they were locals or fellow travelers. Cape Town truly knows how to make everyone feel at home.
Fantastic Gay Beaches
But wait, there’s more! 😉 Cape Town’s gay beaches are as good as it gets. Don’t miss:
🏖️ Clifton Third Beach – A classic for sunbathing and socializing.
🏖️ Sandy Bay – Our personal favorite. This nudist beach is not only surrounded by jaw-dropping natural beauty but also frequented by some of the hottest guys we’ve ever seen. The hike down might work your glutes, but trust us, the rewards are worth it. 🙃
🌟 Pro tip: Head to the far end of the beach and explore the trails for a mix of nature and… a little something extra. 😏 Whether you're dipping your toes into nudism for the first time or fully embracing your inner exhibitionist, Sandy Bay is the ultimate playground.
Stellenbosch Wine Country
In addition to the beaches and bars, save time to explore Stellenbosch Wine Country for an unforgettable day trip! A short drive from Cape Town, it’s a wine lover’s paradise. Two of our absolute favorites:
🍷 Babylonstoren – A stunning estate we discovered thanks to Brian Kelly (The Points Guy).
🍷 Delaire Graff Estate – A feast for the senses, with breathtaking views, impeccable art, and some of the best wine we’ve ever tasted.
🌟 Pro tip: We made it work seamlessly by using Uber to visit both estates and then heading straight to the airport for our evening flight. Bonus: the wineries happily held our bags while we enjoyed the delicious food and wine. It was the perfect ending to our South African adventure. 🥂
