I've been following the "Eevee next" engine in Blender. The current alpha version includes ray tracing and other features, though there are still some minor issues when rendering animations with shadows. However, these issues will likely be resolved by the developers soon.
What does this mean?
Instead of taking 13 minutes per frame (with 25 frames per second in my animations), rendering will now take around 7-10 seconds per frame.
Micro skin details and sweat won't get blurred by the denoiser. Currently, I have to use a lot of tricks to retain that detail without rendering a frame for hours, even on my 4080 Super. For example, I render volumetrics in the old Eevee and then combine them with the Cycles render, or I bring half-denoised skin gloss with the compositor.
Much faster viewport and lighting performance, giving me more time to experiment with the lighting of the scene instead of waiting to see the results.
Cons:
There might be a slight hit to lighting quality, but it doesn't mean amazing results can't be achieved with the new Eevee. Despite its current alpha status and issues, I would like to render this one last scene in Eevee Next.
