I personally wouldn’t call it a “lie” and I made that connection when Vegeta gave his “Kakarot you are number 1” speech, but I understand why you titled it like that and we all have different experiences with media, it’s so cool to see how you made that connection. Within the world of Dragon Ball, what Goku is saying is true. But in the meta-narrative, Vegeta can never remain on top. Both these things can be true at the same time because they’re true at different dimensions. That’s also why Goku had to return in the final chapters (or Buu arc if you prefer to organize the serialization in to arcs), Gohan had his victory against Cell and we got to have him grow up and fall in love with Videl, but ultimately Dragon Ball is Goku’s story and the story of Goku is Dragon Ball. Goku is the moral epicenter of Dragon Ball and always has been. The story needs him in the center and this is a big reason I love how the manga ends. It’s an endless legend about a pure hearted person who is always pursuing to become stronger! I love it! And I love your videos Lance! 😁😊

2024-10-09 16:41:42 +0000 UTCAlthough I do have a question since I've always thought about this from the angle of GT: While many people may be cynical (Not saying you are) in believing that Vegeta in GT was just given Super Saiyan 4 simply to appease certain fans or do something cool. I actually think that Vegeta gaining Super Saiyan 4 is in a way....a reward. The fact that Vegeta now only trains to test his limits, he finally catches up to Goku (At least for a while). Ironically when he stopped being obsessed with Goku he actually achieved his goal. -- In fact one of the family he claimed he cared nothing about helped him achieve this power too. (Let's face it Goku has had plenty of help too so, Vegeta using a machine isn't weak).

2024-10-07 16:53:41 +0000 UTCI never thought I'd say this......but the Dub of GT actually has done a significant job of making things better. I always had the idea put in me because Goku said that he's out of power due (Implied due to his hunger and the heat) I always assumed he was biding time to gain enough power to transform. Unfortunately I don't think that was the case for the Sub. Although I do think the 4 Star Dragon Fight against Goku still remains more strategic in the next episode (With Goku still using the environment). Also glad you talked about Vegeta's line and everything else.
