The Super Mario Bros. Movie Review!
Added 2023-04-06 15:58:05 +0000 UTCI promised there'd be an impromptu bonus video this week, so while I'm busy making the final touches like a thumbnail and title and all that other stuff, you guys get to see it first! It's been 30 years, but a new Super Mario Bros. movie is finally here! My Mario doll and I sit down to share our initial thoughts. Is it everything a Mario fan could hope for? The first half is non-spoilers if you just want to get an idea as to whether or not you want to see it. But if you want all the nitty-gritty details, I have all of them in the second half! The movie was about what I expected. A better story would have been nice, but outside of a couple of the RPG spinoffs, story has never really been the forte of Mario so I wasn't expecting anything more than a fun ride, and it delivered on that. Not saying the movie gets a free pass on story issues, more just that's where my expectations were at before going to see it. Spoiler comments below. While I get where you're coming from with Peach being 'too' competent and overshadowing Mario a bit, I feel it should be pointed out that her wedding plan ultimately fails. She kicks some ass for a bit. Freezes Bowser, pauses the chains lowering the prisoners. But she also gets taken out when King Bobomb blows up and Mario and DK still save the day with their arrival. I would have liked for Luigi to have more agency in his escape though yeah, though I really did like the moment where he saves Mario at the end. The references were mostly cute, but I feel like the blue shell mario kart thing was maybe a bridge too far. Because it's what causes the 'second act low point' where Mario and DK plummet into the water and briefly give in to despair. And if know what a blue shell in mario kart is it's a funny gag. But if you don't...that's a somewhat important story beat that may just confuse people. Final comment: Peach was really killing it whenever she got a power up, I loved her fire flower and ice flower gowns.
