The Boo Arc Final Battle!

Dragon Ball Dissection enters the final battle against Majin Boo! Punches are thrown, blasts are blasted, but what's really important is the heart and soul. After a long stretch of forgettable and pointless bits of action, does this arc finally stick the landing? Check it out a week early and ad-free. Thanks so much for supporting the channel!

Thank you for bringing attention to Goku biting Boo on the head lol that's always stood out to me. You've given me more to appreciate for this fight that I usually don't like very much, great analysis!

More comments: #17 having never met Goku and yet saying it's been a while since he heard Goku's voice is one of those inconsistencies that nonetheless works better than it should. #17 would at least know what Goku looks and sounds like thanks to Dr. Gero's data, and since Dr. Gero's revenge against Goku is the reason he and #18 are cyborgs in the first place, Goku has effectively, though indirectly, had a major impact on his (and #18's) existence too. Also, about Toriyama's irreverent sense on humor: That's something I've always appreciated about him, particularly when it comes to Dragon Ball itself. The fact that the guy that created Dragon Ball doesn't take Dragon Ball nearly as seriously as most of its fanbase does itself feels like a joke- the kind of joke that Toriyama himself would write.

I mentioned it last time! =P

No comment on Goku mentioning that he could have defeated Fat Buu earlier but didn't to give the kids something to do? I figured that was the one exception to your rejection of the idea that the next generation failing was intentional- unless you're saving that for when Uub enters the picture..... Also, I like the idea that Vegeta only committed to being a family man because he mistakenly thought having loved ones to protect was the secret to Goku's strength. It would be very much in character for him at that point in the story.

I think honestly that Toriyama should have ran with the anime's rules but just said something like that Boo was strong enough to kill dead people, don't give Goku the exposition give it to the Supreme Kaio who would know this because something something he's fought Boo before. I think rather than messing with (Semi-) established powers that come with being the living dead making Boo more of a threat (especially because he'd passed through to the land of the Kaios which may pose a threat to the dead on the Grand Kaio's planet) would work better than a mini retcon (ofc not really because of most anime stuff in the land of the dead where that rule was mentioned was filler)

The strongest form of Buu is the only thing that matters!

"You spared me because you could see I might grow a heart." ...Did Vegeta watch the Funimation version of that scene?

Oh wow, I’m honestly into the idea of Vegeta’s speech being used as a joke set up. It reminds me of a take I had when first reading the manga a few years ago, which is that the design of SSJ3 is also a gag.

Another amazing episode, although I kinda say that about every DBD release. Among many other things I’ve learned from your analysis of DB, I really appreciate this point about how characterization is more important than power or action. It’s something I’ve found myself thinking about more and more frequently lately in the context of other manga, be in DB Super or One Piece or My Hero Academia

Tales from the Nuzlocke

I’ve always liked the parallel between the Genki Dama in the Boo arc and the Genki Dama at the end of GT in that: In the Boo arc the vast majority of the people of Earth donate Genki to “Mr Satan”, but quite literally everyone in the universe willingly donates Genki to Son Goku in GT. No trickery involved. You could argue the GT route is not very “Toriyama” but I always liked it as a sign of growth for the people of Earth and tying into the “Grand Tour” aspect of Goku making himself known to the people of Earth and the Universe.

For all its faults, I do like the way they beat Buu. It reminds me of the end of the Saiyan arc. Despite Vegeta's hangups about losing to Goku, it took Goku, Gohan, Krillin and even Yadjerobe to take down Vegeta. I find that and the ending here more interesting and memorable most of the other final battles in the series.
