Early Access Movie 12 Review!

A wild Gogeta appears in the final installment of Dragon Ball Dissection December! Since he's the whole reason Toriyama created Vegetto for his series, he's gotta be a big deal, right? Well... um, look at all these crazy dead people coming back to life! And we finally get a Vegeta I can enjoy seeing crawl his way out of Hell!

See it now, a week early and ad-free. Thank you so much for your support. I hope you've enjoyed Dragon Ball Dissection December this year. This definitely seems like the last year we'll be covering the original series, which has made me very emotional lately. What's in store for the future? Well, just make sure you watch this video until the end, and then you'll know!

All December patrons can enter the contest to win a copy of Akira Toriyama's Manga Theater, a collection of Toriyama's one shot manga, including the Dragon Ball prototypes. Provide your entry in the link below! https://www.patreon.com/posts/59358944

Early Access Movie 12 Review!

Comments

Movie 12 has always been one of my personal favorites, and particularly nostalgic for me since one of the first clips I saw of Japanese DBZ was Goku powering up to Super Saiyan 3 against Janemba. I think Movie 12 represents the best aspects of the Buu arc, in that it features the mix of humor and flashy high-stakes action that defines the Buu arc without the stuff that made the Buu arc so divisive. While you wouldn't say it's the series done right due to it's simplicity, and I wouldn't go that far either; I do think the film's simplicity works in its favor in the sense that the series proper tends to start faltering when the details start getting too complex for Toriyama to keep straight. Dragon Ball tends to work best when it keeps things simple. Janemba has always been one of my favorite movie villains as well. Buu is one of my favorite Dragon Ball villains and I like movie Buu just as much. In particular, I like how they take the reality-warping aspect of Buu and turn it up to 11 with Janemba by having him literally warp reality on a scale we never saw with Buu. Plus all the creative, crazy powers they give him make up for his lack of characterization.

Lance, will you do a special episode for conclusion of the analysis of the manga as a whole or it will end in the last part of Boo?

Sergio PM

It will be part of the next episode. I doubt it will be the entire episode... but probably most of it.

This movie has always been one of my personal favorites and is particularly nostalgic for me since one of the earliest clips I saw of Japanese DBZ was from this movie (the scene where Goku transforms into Super Saiyan 3). It also contains two of my favorite pieces of music from the Kikuchi score, from the aforementioned scene and the following beatdown Goku gives Janemba. Janemba is totally just Toei's take on Buu, but I love him about as much as I love Buu. I particularly like that they go further with his nature as a reality-warper than Toriyama did with Buu, having him literally alter reality on a scale we never saw with Buu. What he lacks in characterization, he makes up for with awesome abilities.

A little bummed that you didn't get to use any music cues from the movie this time around, presumably due to copyright strike concerns. Any hope of a reupload with such cues in the future? Maybe as a little exclusive treat for us patrons? Also, happy to hear you'll be covering Dragon Ball GT! In a way, this movie is a better version of the Buu arc (I view its anime adaption in a similar way, but to a lesser extent). It's a summation of the Buu arc's strengths with the flaws ironed out. I can overlook the Buu arc's flaws and enjoy it just fine, but I would definitely take a less flawed, better executed version of it; and that's what this represents. I think the simplistic story actually works to the film's benefit for once in that regard since there's inherently less details to keep track of, and Dragon Ball tends to trip up when the details start getting too numerous and complex. This one has always been one of my personal favorites and is particularly nostalgic for me as Goku turning Super Saiyan 3 against Janemba was one of the earliest clips I ever saw of Japanese Dragon Ball Z (courtesy of Caster Troy's Vegeta Insane/Ginga Giri Giri). Janemba has always been one of my favorite movie villains as well. Buu is one of my favorite Dragon Ball villains and I like Toei's take on him just as much. I like that they go further with Janemba's nature as a reality-warper than Toriyama did with Buu- The plot is him literally altering reality, and on a scale we never saw with Buu (at least in the manga). That extends to his abilities as well- what he lacks in characterization he makes up for with awesome abilities in both incarnations (and I love how half of those abilities are just him turning random objects lying around into creatively lethal weapons).

Okay so I’m Jewish and never celebrate Christmas, but seeing my name in the credits for this episode gave me the same rush of excitement as a kid on Christmas morning 😂😂

I saw this movie first when my older brother liked DBZ, before I got into it proper, on his Japanese version VHS tape. I was pretty much able to follow it despite not knowing a lick of Japanese back then. It’s a pretty good movie and actually it’s my favourite fight involving SSJ3 Goku in DBZ - I love when he plows through Janemba with those two blasts in hand, that cause him to tear apart and then morph into his second form. I’m very sorry to hear about your accident, Mistare!! Please take care, and thank you so much for pushing on with your work. As always you inform and entertain like no other! When you said you’ll be covering GT, I went “Oooh!!” out loud! I’ll be very much looking forward to that. GT is a mixed bag and it’ll be great to see what you have to say on it all, as I’ve enjoyed your brief written GT episode summaries previously! Merry Christmas and a very Happy Year to you and all your supporters and fans!! ✨🎄⭐️✨ Thank you for brightening my Christmas and every year!! Hope you get to enjoy yourself as you want to!

I honestly liked Gogeta just kicking Janemba's ass in a few seconds because after seeing two Fusion arrogant jackass's fail, he gets the job done. Especially given the fact that Gohan, Vegeta and even Goku at times failed due to having too much fun in their fights. I get the fact that his Soul Punisher is a little unusual may be weird but heck if the Fusion of Gotenks (Who also made 100 Ghosts to destroy hitler which is cool) can create Kamikaze Ghosts of all things I don't see why Gogeta couldn't do a similarly weird and creative move. Plus Goku's Spirit Bomb already only targets evil which could be said as to why Gogeta is able to revert the Ogre back to life. ---- I do want to ask a question though, I couldn't help but notice in another comment that you had already recorded a "God rant" about the Kaioshin, does this mean that that will be a single episode alone next year?

Merry Christmas Lance!

Tales from the Nuzlocke

One of the only DBZ movies I haven't actually seen in full. I really should see it. :D >the Wel Come sign I see it
