Dragon Ball Dissection December Begins in November!

Dragon Ball Dissection December begins! Majin Boo's fight with Gotenks continues. Nearly all the main characters are killed, but the story barely notices. How can a volleyball attack make up for the loss of Gotenks's family and friends? Eh, it can't.

Enjoy this video a week early, ad-free. Thank you for your support. Be on the lookout next Wednesday for the contest post!

I feel the anime adaptation at least somewhat improves on Buu killing everyone by actually showing it. It may not fix every issue with it, but it at least improves on how Toriyama handled it. And this is an insightful take on "Ultimate" Gohan. While I don't dislike him (and can even find him cool in certain contexts), I will admit that he's one of the least interesting aspects of the Buu arc. Gotenks, for as much as he's tonal dissonance incarnate, at least has aspects that work in execution. I guess the way Gohan's handled in the Buu arc in general never really bothered me because I got everything I wanted out of him character-wise in the Cell arc.

I agree, I also thought Goku would WANT to kill Fat Buu after he supposedly killed Gohan too. When I heard that Goku could have destroyed Fat Buu (He says this on the Kai planet) I was like "Wow, that's a let down". I mean I guess he was going to see his son anyway from his perspective but really?

Ya know I know nobody can verify this but: I am proud of myself for guessing what you'd want to talk about in DBD December, I pretty much figured you'd make it to Kid Buu and the 12th Z Movie but no farther.

So before I watched this arc I watched Boujack Unbound and when Buu killed the civilian characters I was practically BEGGING Goku to break the rules and teleport to kick the crap out of Boo because he could do that if he wanted to. Idk Goku sitting there not even batting an eye and saying "The dragon balls can revive them" felt weird to me as someone who grew up with the Schemmel Goku and feels kinda weird as someone who's now acquainted with the Manga Goku I feel like he would try to do everything in his power to get down to Earth and stop Boo especially because last time Kururin died Goku went ballistic. I guess it was to not distract Gohan from his power up but still this part kinda irks me just for how Goku reacts to the deaths of his friends. It just feels wrong in my book.

I stopped watching the series after what they did to Gohan. They build up everything to be about him only to fool us like that. After what happened to Gohan I literally couldn’t watch goku come back and save the day. To this day I can’t watch super based on what they did here. It just killed the series for me

Yeah, Toriyama shifting instantly to goofy antics after murdering almost everyone who matters in the DB cast was kind of a terrible idea. Way back at the start of the DBD episodes on the Boo arc, you mentioned how elements like the return to humor and magic make the arc feel more like a finale. I would add that the unfortunate treatment of its supporting cast adds to that feeling, where our heroes have gone from a well rounded group of interesting characters into cardboard cutouts meant to die and raise the stakes.
