Early Dragon Ball Dissection!

Dragon Ball Dissection December continues with Bobbidi taking over Vegeta. This fractious move is perhaps Vegeta's most iconic moment. But does it really hold up? What works and what doesn't? It's the exciting sequel to The Cell Arc Part 12. Because, you know, Vegeta does this a lot.

Awesome video!! I almost never consider anything mentioned in your videos until I see them explained out for me, and I love it. I remember watching the Funimation dub of this arc for the first time on weekday morning TV. I was shocked and enthralled that Vegeta would make this turn back to the dark side, and it really hit when he killed the spectators at the tournament. And later on it would be emotional and also captivating when he sacrifices himself against Buu, particularly when he has that conversation with Piccolo, is confronted by Goten and says goodbye to Trunks. But I never imagined that years later I would get to see all of this so wonderfully analysed in such a thoughtful and entertaining way. Thank you always, Mistare!!

Honestly it really makes me wonder on how you are going to act towards vegeta characterization in the moro arc. Personally i feel like it makes alot of sense but i don't want to spoil any of it for you.

It's crazy how i didn't notice this about vegeta character til i started watching your videos, it's like you open up our third eye or something and show us the issues with the stories. He's literally the cause for the later half of cell and the majority of majin buu and it's all his fault. Vegeta dying permanently after his sacrifice would have been compelling as hell. But i think him dying to the spirit bomb would have maybe atoned much better than his sacrifice towards majin buu, since that one failed to do anything. Also it was his idea for the spirit bomb and what better way to atone for all of the things that he has done but by dying again while keeping buu in place. This time since he is a soul and goku say's so himself if he dies again, he's gone for good. I think that would have given him quite the send off in the end.

You're right and you should say it.

This was a good take. I was (and still am) a fan of Vegeta, but I became a fan of his during the Saiyan Arc and Freeza Arc that I saw as a kid, and I always found the Cell Arc as kinda boring, especially in regards to Vegeta. His obsession with Goku got old, and they really needed to make him earn their trust more. The story tries to explain that had Vegeta actually tried, he could’ve easily shrugged off Babidi’s attempt to turn him into a minion, which implies that Vegeta has more good in him than evil, but the fact that he then kills people of his own free will shows how this doesn’t work on paper. I always found a problem with this, and I now know why. They should’ve gone with your half way plot, where Vegeta is responsible for letting himself fall under Babidi’s influence, but is then forced by Babidi to do things he doesn’t want to do, like fighting Gohan and Shen. He finds that Babidi’s magic has greater influence that he thought and makes his breaking free of the control more compelling to his character. Maybe then, he wouldn’t have felt the need to kill Budokai attendants of his own free will just to show that he’s “evil”. Nice reference to our lame duck dictator in chief. Never would’ve made that connection until now.

I remember watching this arc as a kid in the early 2000s and was waiting for this to happen. When Vegeta first appeared I remember thinking "when is he going to do something evil?" Maybe it is because I was a kid and did not have the baggage of adult thinking, but I never felt Vegeta was redeemed or good. I always assumed he fought Cell because Cell was stronger than him and he needed the other members of the Dragon Team for the same reasons he fought Freeza with them. And as an adult watching this I'm shocked that people are taken aback by it because it is so telegraphed from basically when Goku shows up. It's a great moment in the arc and well done in the arc, but... as mentioned it is very predictable it was going to happen from the word go because that is just what Vegeta does. It is such a part of his character that it is almost surprising they haven't done the stunt in Super (yet). Remember I love the Buu arc and it is probably my 2nd favourite arc in Z. But, this moment while making sense in the context of the story was tired and predictable even at the time.

God I love Dragon Ball Dissection December!!!!!
