This came out when I was in high school, and it really was a pivotal movie for me and my friends. Rural Arkansas was not exactly the most tolerant place in the country (understatement). I love this movie for making me realize so many things I never thought about before. Humanizing people in a way that hadn’t been done in the mainstream up to that point. It’s amazing when I look back and see how cultural attitudes have changed just in my lifetime. There will always be ignorant morons trying to set everyone back, but I still have hope.

Not just embodying a disease at the time a lot of people were scared to death of it and giving over a movie star look to be that.

2023-10-06 07:23:46 +0000 UTCI am happy you got to see this film Brother J. It is such an important film, especially back when it was made. I also love the director, Johnathan Demme, who was known for directing The Silence of the Lambs. If you rewatch Philadelphia from a "horror" director point of view you can see many horror elements in it, from the tilted cam shots to the zoom-in close ups, even the eerie music that's sprinkled throughout. Demme made Aids a character in it's own right as a looming spectre of death that could reach out with it's icy finger and take anyone it wants at any time. Aids back in the day was treated kind of like early Covid was, where people were so fearful of getting it because we knew nothing about it at the time as far as transmission. Covid to a lesser degree was treated the same way, we all were staying away from each other, fearful to get close to anyone because they may have it, becoming distrustful of others. I agree there should be more films with Denzel and Tom together. I hope one day you will watch The Equalizer trilogy with Denzel. I saw the third one recently when it came to theaters and it was so good.
