I saw this film in theaters and I think it is one of Hugh's best performances. This film reminds me of a quote from Richard Dawkins, something I have taken to heart in my life "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?"

Dude, you know an Aronofsky banger that NO ONE reactions to? The Wrestler (2008/9)! Mickey Rourke was robbed that year for best actor at the Oscars. A great great drama about how tough it gets for the old-timers in pro wrestling. Also Marisa Tomei is in it so there's that.... (I'm convinced she's like white Halle Berry -- she was just as bad in the 90s and looks killer years later).

Brother J, I am so happy you enjoyed this film and I am glad I chose it to share with you. I hope it is one you will watch again more than once because every time I have watched it I notice something more and I have seen it countless times. It is one of my fav films. A little context, Hugh's doctor character did in fact come up with the immortality drug and that is why he is flying thru space in his bubble craft. He is thousands of years old as is the human race he left behind. Once humans received his immortality drug and lived longer they evolved tech to the point of making these bubble ships. He planted the seed of the tree which created the immortality drug over Izzy's grave and therefore she was basically absorbed into the tree. So he put her tree self into the ship and set off for Shibalba, the nebula from her story on the rooftop in the snow. He wanted to take her there because in her story it would some day explode and create new life and he wanted to be with her when it happened far in the future so they would "live together forever". He had been traveling thru space for thousands of eons to reach it and he still could not get over his regrets which is why Izzy kept showing up to help him work past it and accept death as a part of life and it took him that long. Being alone for so long with only his memories and regrets probably is what caused him to develop hallucinations as well as from the tree compound which was probably a little psychedelic. Can you imagine what would happen to the human brain living that long with yourself? If you notice, he only subsists on a small bit of bark from the tree. There is no other food in the ship. Only the tree and water. The conquistador story that Izzy wrote represents her journey with her brain tumor. The inquisitor who was whipping his own back represents the "enemy" or the tumor which wants to take over her "kingdom" (her brain) and kill her. Her "subjects" which were the people hung upside down represent her immune system, fighting for her. The conquistador represents Tommy seeking the cure/tree of life. At the end, future Tommy wrapped the conquistador story with his own journey which is why he showed up in the story floating. Darren Aronofsky is such a wonderful story teller and he did an amazing job with this one. The cast, the music, the beautiful sets, the story, all just worked perfectly. Can you tell I could dissect and talk about this film forever? :) J, don't ever apologize for crying (kwying), it is catharsis for the soul.

Is this that move with a conquistador flying through space in a fish bowl with a tree?

John

Oh hells yes. Darren Aronofsky is up there for me with Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan. Big ups!!

Nonimal

That still of J is pretty perfect. "TF is this?" he seems to be saying. (I love this flick, btw.)
