First Time Watching I Love Ashley Bailey!!!

First Time Watching I Love Ashley Bailey for JL.   Patreon Exclusive/Patron Pick.

*This is a request for a "The Room"-esque student film, so there was no need to blur/mute, as it's not copyrighted material.   As much as I'd like to do it more often, this will likely be a one time thing.

"Only if we have hot sex..." Shooters shoot man

Lol I’m have to go back and look for now

Big Frank, I was the one who commissioned it and I wouldn’t say it was a special movie for me (aside from having a lot of friends who were in it including my current significant other, and it showing what campus looked like when I was a student there. Several of the buildings where scenes were filmed and others which were backdrops in the outdoor scenes have been torn down now.) but it is something my friends who were also in it and I continue to laugh at to this day. (I had a lot of other irons in the fire at the time so my only on screen appearance was when the two girls were rolling around beating each other with the inflatable penis)

Echo Moon, that’s one of the best and most well reasoned assessments I’ve ever seen of many of the things which went wrong with this movie. I spoke with the actor who played Pickles when I went back to during Christmas to see my mom in 2019. He was both bemused and comically frustrated to have gotten a call from Hovis the previous month about reshoots. He said he told him “Look, dude, for starters I’ve gained 75 pounds since we filmed the movie. I’ve lost most of my hair. Also, my character contributed absolutely nothing to the plot and I don’t have a clue why my character was even in the movie.” Matt, the guy with chin strap beard, told me that he was in one of the same classes as Hovis and one day after class Hovis came up to him and told him he had the perfect look for a role in this film he was making. Matt told him “Thanks... but I don’t know a thing about acting.” Hovis told him “you don’t have to; I will make it look like you know how to act in post production.” Poor Matt actually had gotten his hopes up that this was going to be his big break, and at the premiere, he and about 15-20 of his friends sat in the front row. As soon as the lights came up, he walked out followed by his posse. He was visibly enraged. He still hasn’t spoken to Hovis since the night of the premiere.

Whoever commissioned J to watch this movie... It must be a very special movie for him or her, I totally respect that. I just didnt get it, though J delivers every time, he was truly exhausted by the end.

Big Frank

I tapped out 30 mins in and just skipped to the wrap up.

frost1977

It was a patreon pick, so I'm not sure. LoL

Is this a standard movie or one of those "lets torture J" types of deals?

Big Frank

Poor J, I felt your pain buddy. I will say, no student film should ever be this long...30 mins max is what "first" films/student films should cap out at. One pitfall most early filmmakers/writers do is try to pack so much dialog into their scripts. There is a golden rule in writing...Show don't tell. Don't have your actors talk constantly to tell the story, show the story in action, emotional, or physical scenes or stuff happening in the background or on tv/radio, that sort of thing. One rule of thumb I always try to adhere to when writing/making my own short films or if I watch someone else's low budget film is this: if you can turn the sound off and people still know what is going on in the film then you've got a good one. One of my biggest irks with this film you just watched is the actors rushing their lines (probably because there was soooo much dialog) as well as speaking flat with not much inflection in their speech. Also, every set was overlit and it didn't seem like they used any gold bounce with a flexfill or gels on their lights to soften the light. Darker sets help with atmosphere as well as it looks more natural than super bright. High light can also flatten the movie making everything look two dimensional and sorta fake. Also, if the writer/director is still editing and doing re-shoots to this day, then they just need to put it away and take an L on this one and move onto the next one. On a side note: Brother J, you bringing up fish boils just takes me back. I grew up with big ole fish boils (we always had crawdads added to ours) and fish frys (you know where they bring out the huge cast iron cauldron, put it on a big fire outside, fill it with oil, and fry up fish/hushpuppies/shrimps etc.) I miss that. I don't live in the south anymore and no one in the state I live in now knows anything about that. LOL They don't know what they are missing.

Echo Moon

It's definitely something. LoL

JL, not only was Hovis serious about this, but to this day, he is STILL editing away on it and contacting actors about filming scene reshoots. Also, I still crack up over the fact that when CJ rage quit the movie, they actually worked his rage quitting into a scene of the film. Also, the four year old JL was the best actor in the movie? That’s Hovis’s little sister. The teenage girl with the 4 year old is Hovis’s middle sister. After two years of filming, there was a big on campus premiere. (Ironically enough, in the same theater some scenes were filmed in, which was highly surreal) When the end credits rolled and the lights came up, there was a palpable sense of shell shock. I have never seen a movie audience stay seated and silent for so long after a movie ended. I will post more behind the scenes information

Could you please watch A Dogs Purpose 🙏🏻

Leeanna Breeden

I'm confused, is this a movie? Documentary?

Miss Gigglebox

Hey Blank, there's also a ~30min movie called Kung Fury. Keep that one in mind for a time that y'all are strapped for time. It's cool, retro and hilarious. So if you ever need a short/small release that still packs a punch. Go for it.

Lifehouse

Shall we say......JLoween 2023?? :) I know that a lot of the old films are public domain now as well as some of the 50s/60s giant animal and sci-fi films are too (like Attack of the Giant Leeches and The Brain that Wouldn't Die). Many are good hokey fun! So I looked up a list and put the link below if you ever wanted to go thru it and you and J can find something public domain to share maybe every once in a while. Sometimes going back and seeing what folks had to watch before our time can be interesting. My fav "big bug" film of yore is Empire of the Ants (1977), but sadly it is not public domain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_in_the_public_domain_in_the_United_States

Echo Moon

That was the only one that popped in my head that's known I'd probably be able to use. LoL

Blank EOM

Hey Blank, don't forget Night of the Living Dead (1968) has no copyright either. Zombieeeees awaaaaaaaay!!!
