The Differences Between Autism and BPD | Autistic Advice #9

“When we diagnose personality disorders we may be describing a neurodivergent person in distress” is one of the most powerful and well said things I’ve ever heard in any mental health space. As a person diagnosed, treated and medicated with and for BPD and PTSD for over 10 years it was so validating to hear you say that. I have been trying to put that into words since beginning my search for and autism specialist 2 years ago. I’m so grateful you’re in this space and helping people, thank you. 👏🏻👏🏻🫶🏻

I began the process of being diagnosed with BPD but the wait was so long, I finished university and moved before my appointment came. My partner, like Lewis and your Mum, said he didn’t think it fit me at all. He’s never said that about autism! Before the BPD process began, they thought I was bipolar and I had to track my moods for a month. That was enough to rule out bipolar. Looking back, it’s so odd to me that no one, at any point, thought autism because it fits me like a glove.

Thank you!

If you click on the Membership tab and scroll down, there is a link for Discord. I think if you click that, it should take you to where you need to go. I joined a while ago and can't remember what I did, but that looks like it should be what you need.

Christine Anatone

Hi I'm new here, sorry if this isn't where I should ask, but how do I get the link for the discord server?

Mormmo

"Late husband Lewis"? Did I miss something here? Did Lewis die?!?

Julie Fore

Thank you for this video! I was recently diagnosed with both autism and bpd after almost a decade of being misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. I haven’t watched this yet as I’m in the middle of another video but this is going to be my next step!

Thank you so much for this video! It's definitely an eye opener to where there are other diagnoses in the DSM that have overlap or parallel to autism at some points. It also reinforces the idea of your 'tismdar videos, and that what we can see may or may not reflect sufficient information about an individual's personal internal experience to understand if they are alike to us in the sense of also being autistic or if we may share traits for different reasons. Loving that you all are settling in to your new home! With your bookcase, you had mentioned you found it to be too dark. I personally enjoy the look of a contact paper or wallpaper inside of cabinet like spaces (bookcases, closets, etc). It might be something fun to explore! The lamp is absolutely gorgeous, major heart-eyes for it!!

Actually a bedside table could be way too high (it's hard to guess the height of the background items) maybe a foot stoll or something appropriately sized holding up the single item. Such as an upcoming book you're reading, a soft toy, a stock photo of your late husband Lewis, a sponsored item used in his absence (/j), OMG it could be a statue of a snail with a hidden slug on the opposing bookshelf, and only the most dedicated fans can slowly piece together the stop motion battle waged over 100s of your videos to see which slimy creature will reign supreme! 🙃

I have a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and my PDoc thinks I won't be able to remove it because of what she's calling mania. I also have some problems with how food is allowed to have nasty ingredients in this country, the US, and some of those ingredients cause me to have a very bad emotional reaction which mimics a terrible kind of hypo-mania. I'm also turning 60 in a few months and am trying to figure out if I should just be quiet until I'm old enough to be on regular Social Security. I'm currently on disability which I will lose if I lose my diagnosis. Although Autism is also a disability, it would take years of not having any insurance to change from one to the other. All of this makes me wonder if most people with Bipolar II, like I have, are actually Autistic and maybe the same for people with BPD. I also have an off-topic question, are your eyes brown or hazel?

Chuck Hargis

Like you when I saw the BPD criteria at first I thought it was a good fit for me. That was before I got the autism dx. My psychiatrist diagnosed EUPD and is holding on to that even after I was diagnosed autistic elsewhere.

Brían O'Byrne

Ugh, thank You for this one! I can´t hear that often enough, as I heard it too often. Maybe the first criteria is enough: I soooo much need to be left alone! I start fights if I am overwhelmed and desperatly just want to be alone in an perfectly ordered, clean and quiet environment. I guess that´s not very BPD?

I have yet to see any evidence that personality disorders are different from at the core actually being autistic / neurodivergent. I like to watch people with lived experience talk about their internal experience with their medical label and hear them talk about their parents behaviours and everything they describe perfectly lines up with them and their parent/s actually being autistic (some in later videos were then later diagnosed with autism). Perhaps I have been extremely unlucky and was presented with unrecognised autistic after autistic but after doing this for months I have yet to be find a lived experience of a personality "disorder" that wasn't undiagnosed autism including antisocial personality disorder (aka sociopath) which was not what I expected. The treatment for APD of this individual at least was to explicitly and logically explain the effect they were having on others, which is exactly what I have to do with my own autistic children. The DSM and medical professionals need to massively reevaluate their understanding of personality disorders and autism/adhd as they are one and the same and the roots should be the one being treated (not ignored), not the symptomatic externally presenting stems. Personality 'disorders' should be renamed as actually insightful definitions of the external presentations of an neurodivergent individual to help caregivers to understand their client and for the individual to help accept and understand the way their brain reacts to overwhelm because that's what these externalised symptoms actually indicate. The DSM from the pieces I've seen seems to focus on splitting hairs between diagnoses and divergence of presentations rather than a deep understanding of them. Likewise from what I've heard from many psychologists the entire psychology literature focusses on divergent theories rather than a collective understanding of the whole.

I agree, perhaps Meg you can also change the lamp's light bulb colour or shade to mix it up (like you do with your ear rings). You could possibly use the space in the bottom right corner of the frame have like a bedside table (or similar) with a single item of interest there that the lamp will then highlight that item. I otherwise think the simplicity of the elements within the frame is perfectly balanced and helps to frame you without being too busy but also is interesting enough to engage our wondering minds. PS that is such a cool looking lamp!

Dr Jay Watts (@Shrink_at_Large on Xitter & BlueSky) is a clinical psychologist who has written at length about the misdiagnosis of autism as BPD under the hashtag #AutismNotPD. It all resonated very strongly with me, as someone who was misdiagnosed with BPD for years. Happy to share my experiences further for a future video, if you decide to go ahead with it. 😊

What about a wall decal for the white wall, or a hanging tapestry or similar?

Fern

I can't find it on my phone, but on the website there's a link under the membership tab for me

Speaking of therapy after diagnosis, my therapist was one of the people who conducted my diagnosis

For your backdrop, I like the bookshelf, it could use some Christmas lights. Decorate it for seasonal stuff (if you like). The lamp is perfect - don't over-clutter your background, because that can get distracting. If you choose to do nothing at all, your background is already great!

How do I join your discord server ?

It's really important that your raising awareness of this issue.Especially as someone with lived experience of being misdiagnosed with eupd and the harm it can cause.I believe there should be manadatory autism training to mental health services that explains the difference between autism and eupd.

Jamie Barton

I was misdiagnosed as bpd and bipolar before I got diagnosed with audhd with hsd. As soon as hsd and adhd is under control with medication, my depression is gone but still just stereotypical tone down autistic hyperfocus and special interest (masking). My impulsivity and hyperactivity is not manic. Isolation is depression but burnout. My hopeless was just from endless struggle from mental and physical pain and exhaustion. Once contributed fact is removed I am not depressed. It is problem with being zebra and not horse.

I was misdiagnosed with bpd/eupd before I was diagnosed with autism and adhd.I often think about how different things could have been if I had known that I was autistic sooner and weather it could have prevented alot of mental health struggles.I experienced alot of judgements from some NHS mental health professionals and there was alot of misunderstandings because I didn't know I was autistic at the time.I was admitted to psyche hospitals a few times and i thought things wouldn't get better but now I know I am autistic and don't have a personality disorder I am alot kinder to myself and I know how to better support myself and manage my mental health.

Jamie Barton

I volunteer as a person misdiagnosed with BPD. It took almost 14 years to get diagnosed with ASD and I still struggle with the whole "spending so much effort trying to battle a disorder I don't have and feeling like I can't even do a personality disorder right"

Eva Frašková

Hi, I'm here after being misdiagnosed as BPD, i even spent 2 years in a psych hospital, now at the age of 43 an autism diagnosis fits, and the 10 years i spent being treated for bpd are behind me. I have a great therapist who identified this. Just a note that recently the term BPD and EUPD are being discontinued, and to quote from the NHS website 'The way personality disorders are diagnosed is changing. Instead of being diagnosed with a type of personality disorder (such as borderline personality disorder), you may be diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe personality disorder. A mental health professional can talk to you about what your diagnosis means' Happy to chat more about misdiagnosis and mistreatments of bpd and autism.

Aww, thank you so much! I'm so glad! 💛

Just a side note before I watch. That backdrop is on point. I love it! Honestly much better. And so cozy! 🥰
