The Alltistic Podcast Episode 11 - Decoding Idioms: Autistic vs Neurotypical

Today we have a dish best served cold and an open can of worms and peppers in our pants (?)...

An autistic person and a neurotypical person working together to decode idioms (otherwise known as the double empathy solution!)

This was so much fun! Thank you for voting for it on the poll πŸ’› We'll soon upload some images and a video of the dreaded drawer unit to Patreon.

P.S. Don't you just hate when your yogurt tastes like yogurt??? πŸ₯›

Here's a link to Instagram (for an underwhelming experience): https://www.instagram.com/imautisticnowwhat/

Oh gosh, i'm quite far behind aren't I. Mic quality is fantastic now. I can hear you so well over my truck making noises. So that's a big success in my book. I think you did really well on these idioms. I actually surprised myself at how i seemed to know them all & had heard them before. The English language is strange indeed.

So the word for 2 words combined is a compound word

I'm a bit late listening to this one, so I'll try to limit the reaction but let me just mention a few things: 1. Though I know what it means, somehow hearing 'the land of nod' not in a sentence (context) hit me all wrong so I thought it might mean 'being very agreeable' (as in nodding yes). It also kept reminding me of Noddy (the toyland detective). 2. Your podcast has a problem. It's too nice! It makes me want to talk through you guys and join in all the time! (My way of saying I love the chats you guys have.) 3. The dead horse thing. In Dutch we have the same, but it's 'pulling on a dead horse'. A bit nicer than the idea of beating any animals (whether dead or alive, really), though I suppose it's still not PETA acceptable. 4. The fish kettle thing was rather an upsetting one to find out about. Will you stop using it now, Lewis? ;)

Holy cow, I use "I'll burn that bridge when I get there" ALL THE TIME. I get the strangest expressions from people.

Crash Cash

My grandpa would say (of famous people) "they put their trousers on one leg at a time like everybody else" meaning they're "just people" So I said "wait, they aren't smart enough to lean back on the bed and put both legs through at the same time?" I couldn't decipher my grandfather's expression then.

There was a really cool kids book (can't remember the name) which while it didn't explicitly explain autism or other various disabilities in the main story, it did however completely normalise all disabilities. It basically was like a peek into what each families households looked like and was very normalising and inclusive. I'm sure there should be some good kids books by now somewhere but I'm not sure if their is much of a selection in physical stores or libraries at the moment. We have a couple at home but I don't think they are very clear about what they are talking about (they "beat around the bush" or focus on you are ok as a person, which is fine but not informative). Think All Cats Are On The Autism Spectrum is ok. Would love to see videos about it though.

Glen Rose

I think I did feel it like a disturbance in the force

Ben Rice

Aww, that's so kind! Probably won't be long until he is on the Discord πŸ˜… He can chat about Minecraft! Autism is sooo hard to explain in a simple way. I was thinking about doing a video reviewing picture books about autism - wonder if there are any good ones out there!

I'm Autistic, Now What

Love it!! My son would love to wear pink socks πŸ˜‚ Maybe if they get slowly more colourful with time, no one will notice? πŸ€”

I'm Autistic, Now What

I saw there are pink slugs too? 🦘😱

I'm Autistic, Now What

Oh nooo!!

I'm Autistic, Now What

Oh nooo!! I'm sorry 😩 Glad the walls are okay!

I'm Autistic, Now What

Lewis, the neurotypical fish! 🐑

I'm Autistic, Now What

I always picture someone in a fur coat and only their knickers - which makes no sense πŸ˜‚

I'm Autistic, Now What

An entire episode in a South African accent πŸ˜…

I'm Autistic, Now What

Could you sense that I was calling on you from across the ocean? πŸ˜‚

I'm Autistic, Now What

True! My cat would definitely keep on eating forever πŸ˜…

I'm Autistic, Now What

Nooo, I LOVE rocket surgery πŸ˜‚ 😭 I'll have to start using that one too!!

I'm Autistic, Now What

πŸ˜‚ I wonder if they were laughing when they came up with them!!

I'm Autistic, Now What

ooh! So we do want to open it? Maybe?

I'm Autistic, Now What

It's cute!!!

I'm Autistic, Now What

Packed in like pickles, I love it! Might actually start using that one. 😁

Pandora's box not only released Chaos, but it also released Hope into the world.

MagnaCorpus

I guessed the "test tube" alternative! I simply thought of the stupidest thing I could that would be related to experimentation. πŸ˜‚

MagnaCorpus

Wow! 😲

MagnaCorpus

The remark about using "Feeding two birds with one scone" making you want to use it just to irritate people made me think about how much I enjoy malapropisms and mixed metaphors and using them on purpose. For example: "It's not rocket surgery!" Or "Make like a tree, and get outta here." Or my personal favorite: "I'll burn that bridge when I get there." πŸ˜‚

MagnaCorpus

I'm pretty sure it's the Land of Nod with Nod being the name of a character (fairy or some supernatural creature that helps humans fall to sleep). I want to say Nod was a Shakespearean character.

MagnaCorpus

A dime a dozen implies that the cost of a single item is less than 1 cent... so the things you're buying are practically worthless (possibly very easy to come by).

MagnaCorpus

I'm surprised how many I understood, since English isn't even my first language. The fish kettle went completely over my head. With the land of nod, I thought about nodding with one's head and interpreted it as being surrounded by people who always agree with you, even when you are being an idiot πŸ˜„ The feed a fed horse is a very stupid alternative, since many horses would happily eat more, even if they were just fed. Eating all the time is natural for them. Isn't PETA against keeping animals altogether, so why would they want you to feed horses (or birds) anyway.

EG

I've been called. Theres a lot of idioms with dimes. A dime is 10 cents, so like if you say someone is a dime you are saying they are a 10. I don't know what the origins of dime a dozen tho lol

Ben Rice

Awh I love your son! 🀣πŸ₯° I'm sure the discord would officially adopt him even if he isn't, we would entertain him, he can be our neurodiversity ally when he grows up. Every time I try to have "the talk" with my son about the good (self help) book of the tism he immediately distracts himself and forgets to listen. The ADHD (or is it the PDA πŸ€”) is strong in this one πŸ™ƒ

Glen Rose

See you later alligator don't forget your toilet paper 🀣🚽 Looking forward to live drunk Meg πŸ˜†

Glen Rose

Definitely use the idioms on discord πŸ˜‚. All fur coat and no knickers sounds like code for hanky panky 🐻πŸ§₯πŸš«πŸ‘™πŸ˜˜

Glen Rose

Kettle of fish, that does my head in. I'm guessing it means that person or thing is different from the others or from what you expected. Like Lewis is a different kettle of fish compared to Meg (but we still live him too).

Glen Rose

So I own a house here in Florida, and just before the hurricane, I started hearing a "water running" sound. Nothing was wet. Drove me NUTS. Turned out to be a slab leak, where the pipes buried in the foundation burst. I used 7,000 gallons when I usually use 2,000 in a month, and I had to shut off the water for 4 days. I filled the bathtub so I could flush the toilet and refill it with a pitcher. They had to rip open a ton of the walls so they could put new pipes in, but they redid the walls and you literally can't tell. They replaced my 14 year old water heater because they had to rip it out anyway. Cost me $10,000 though.

Crash Cash

Ugh schools and their obsessions with socks and shoes being same. Congrats society on making kids miserable πŸ˜‚ Saw a kid wearing bright pink leg length socks leaving the school one day, sticking it to them. Brilliant πŸ‘πŸ˜†

Glen Rose

Warning ahead. Graphic warning! Opening a can of fly larvae would be so much worse than worms. Speaking from multiple experiences they go everywhere 😳.

Glen Rose

Those bloody Australian 🦘 slugs 🀣. I stepped on one as a child (so gross) and it looked like a miniature Zerg not a normal slug.

Glen Rose

Our lovely new pets πŸ’€πŸ˜…

I'm Autistic, Now What

Slugs under the door is diabolical 😭 nooo

Issey Sherman

And so glad you enjoyed this one!

I'm Autistic, Now What

I'm sorry you've had to deal with similar. The unfairness of it really gets to me. I notice other people just accepting it and moving on and wish I was the same... but also wish the agents and landlord would just do their job!! I think some landlords just want a passive investment.

I'm Autistic, Now What

I know it wasn't the point of the episode, but the first section about dealing with rental management really hit home for me. I am absolutely the tenant that will go to management about things, especially regarding a renter's "right to peaceful enjoyment of the property". I'll go to bat for other tenants in the building at the drop of a hat, it really brings something out in me. Did keep track of the idioms, but the guesses ended up being like, two pages long, so I'll probably leave it off here. I feel like I was pretty good with most of them, At Daggers Draw was a new one to me though. It was fun learning the origin of Kettle of Fish though! That's definitely one I knew the gist of but never considered the origin. Very fun pod this one.

Sonni Lowe

Oh nooo! But have you ever had pepper in your pants? πŸ˜†

I'm Autistic, Now What

Whoops, sorry! Lots of insects in this one somehow πŸ˜…

This was the video of Uyen trying British food πŸ˜…: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8ijOQGy25E&t=2s She's so wholesome!

I'm Autistic, Now What

I bet that was super frustrating to everyone who knows πŸ˜…

I'm Autistic, Now What

Oooh - we don't want to open a can of those! πŸ˜…

I'm Autistic, Now What

There's actually a channel "Lost in the Pond" that goes into the things that drove him nuts when he moved from UK to USA

Crash Cash

Oh no! Don’t let me start on English vs American foods

Tessa Coker

Knickers! Trousers UK. Panties and pants US. Tights vs pantyhose. I am English living in California 25 years and it still drives me insane, is that autistic??

Tessa Coker

Aargh! Ant phobia! Too visual

Tessa Coker

"Jumping worms" are an invasive species in North America that degrade soil quality instead of improving it, and can crowd out helpful earthworms

Brianna B

Hearing y'all debate what a dime was very entertaining 😁

Brianna B

I've literally had ants in my pants T.T as a little kid I was playing on the grass and rolled over an anthill and got covered in ants
