The Cabin in the Woods

Comments

The reason you may not remember this movie is an off chance you might have saw the evil dead remake instead of this one back then, both movies came out around the same time and both movies involved an evil cabin in the woods haha, this one is just much moee meta

FWIW I'm on the side of strongly disliking this nihilistic, morally puerile movie :)

Cabin in the Woods was created by Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer tv series, the spin-off Angel tv series, the beloved Firefly tv series and the film Serenity. A fun fan theory has all of Joss Whedon's works connected into the same universe called the Whedonverse. The idea is that it starts in Buffy with the town of Sunnydale built on top of the mouth to Hell, called the Hellmouth, lol. Which is expanded in Angel as understanding there are multiple people across the globe either stopping or encouraging the end of days. Here in Cabin in the Woods, we see yet another prophetic prevention to hell on earth. Then in Firefly, humans leave earth because it "got used up". What if it "got used up" because of the war versus hell and then humans decided to leave earth behind to travel and colonize the stars? lol. Just a bit of fun connecting all the stories. Joss has encouraged the fans to do so, too. The tropes are the Fool (philosopher, wise, jester, idiot, simpleton), Popular Girl (the say whore here but honestly, lets just face it that its clearly a judgement on women that enjoy being popular for various reasons like their body, beauty, youth, and even talent), The Athlete (the white knight type - historically knights were actually the jocks/bullies of the medieval years; they follow orders, they like pushing people around, wouldn't you want your army to be full of thugs too), The Scholar (the learned one, wizard, alchemist, scientist, know-it-all), the Virgin (purity, chase, innocent, doormat, also, ends up being the "Final Girl" type usually). Most films like to mix and match these tropes, too. But, at this point in my life, I'm definitely a Marty, lol. The logic behind why you can't ask for volunteers has a lot to do with the tropes being unaware of their predicament. Being unaware makes them innocent souls that transgress the well defined boundaries of the laws of evil (Don't Read the Latin!, lol). Its the deal between Good and Evil. Evil is only allowed to tempt souls to it, not ask for volunteers, lol. Additionally, its the difference of imprisonment of the ancient ones versus pacifying them. If the ancient ones were imprisoned, then you can sacrifice to it worshipers/volunteers but that would imply that we would have control over its imprisonment. Rather its a bargain and a ritual to pacify that requires lost little lambs guided to the slaughter with temptation. Actually, a great example of this is the film Damsel (2024) with Millie Bobbie Brown on Netflix. So why not kill Marty? The idea behind the film is that all horror movies are about stopping the rise of the ancient evils (distracting the masses). We've just have been watching them from the POV of the victims and not the ones BTS, as in the entire crew that puts together horror films, that's the meta of it, lol. But when the movie becomes self-aware...; there is this theory that when sentience is achieved in something without capabilities then it ultimately finds ways to end its existence. The quick fix, instant gratification. The fastest way to end the film without sequels (because in theory this film is an endless trope of potential sequels after all), lol, is to end the world the film exists in. I.E. get the audience to stop watching horror film tropes because its been done to death...but how else would we train people to read films and their artistic messaging if we didn't have tropes, lol. Circular logic, this is the fault of meta in films, lol. Anyway, next film! lol. Similar films? You mean meta horror films or just campy horror comedies vibes? lol Happy Death Day (2017) Happy Death Day 2U (2019) Waxworks (1988) Return of the Living Dead (1985) In the Mouth of Madness (1994) Gremlins 2: New Batch (1990) Three...Extremes (2004, Chinese) Night Breed (1990) 13 Ghosts (2001) Twilight Zone The Movie (1983) From Hell (2001) Fallen (1998) Little Shop of Horrors (1986) Southbound (2015) The Frighteners (1996) Van Helsing (2004) The Burbs (1989) Idle Hands (1999) Psycho Beach Party (2000) Nothing But Trouble (1991) Stay Tuned (1992) House (1985) Brainscan (1994) Night of the Comet (1984) Dark City (1998) Trollhunter (2010, Norwegian) Annabelle (2014) Blade: Trinity (2004) Damsel (2024) John Carpenter's They Live (1988) Pitch Black (2000) Doom, Unrated (2005) M3gan (2022) M3gan 2.0 (2025) Jeepers Creepers (2001) V/H/S (2012) Heavy Metal (1981) Warlock 2 (1993) Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) Tremors (1990) Underworld (2003) From Dusk til Dawn (1996) Night of the Living Dead (1990, remake)

I'm kinda with Marty, I don't know if humanity really deserves to survive another year. Let's let some innocent mole people evolve into earth's new caretakers until they also become unworthy in approx. 3000 years.
