Sherlock Holmes (2009) | Full Length Reaction!

Comments

Also funny you say that it's like house, house is inspired by Sherlock, the relations is house instead of holms, Wilson instead of Watson, Sherlock is a genius detective and house is a genius doctor, the both got the same personality and also house shares alot of subplots and references to Sherlock

Samuel

can you watch the Benedict Cumberbatch sherlock series

Samuel

Can't wait for the next installation.

Sneaky Poptart

Sherlock Holmes partly inspired Gregory House, according to House's creator, David Shore. :-)

I noticed in the beginning how you said "Robert" then caught yourself and had to finish his name "Downey Jr." Lol, V, getting all familiar with RDJ over here. ;) This representation of Sherlock Holmes is incredibly enhanced by Guy Richie's style of filming. Which can be summed with "Gritty and Intense", lol. Sherlock stories don't have as much action usually except for mostly getting from place to place in a hurry. If you noticed Guy's choice of style to fast forward tracking shots, pause to a crawl, then fast forward again. This helps with the illusion of pace and is more closely related to how our vision works as our eyes dart around to focus on specific spots in our visual field. This is also used in flash backs to show how Sherlock's mind works. He remembers every detail but only cares about specific details so we zoom around then zoom in on flash backs, too. And see how Guy's use of slow motion is only used in times of extreme reaction; during the explosion, for instance, it is slowed down to not only give you the feeling you get when you see a car accident you're about to be in feels but also to show you how quickly, even in slow motion, Sherlock reacts. Yes, this film is very similar to the cases of Sherlock Holmes. Lots of misdirection and some superstition until the case is finally solved. This depiction of Sherlock does reveal his more gritty side than his presentable side. His room is a mess, he "experiments" with illicit substances often, and he is gets stir crazy when he doesn't have a case to work on. However, unlike this depiction he is hygienic, plays violin very well, actually is organized, he is skilled in brawling but usually doesn't fight very often, he is trained in fencing, dancing, and marksmanship but his skills in each vary. He is, however, also an addict. Because of his very high level of intelligence, his addiction is often described as a reason to find new perspectives and perceptions; one so that he doesn't limited himself to possibilities, but also two because he finds regular life very boring and un-stimulating. Today's medical terms would probably describe him as autistic with severe ADHD. A couple small references: At the end, the driver says he packed all of Watson's journals in this bag and Mary asks him if those are his adventures with Sherlock and if he would read them to her someday. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Adventures of Sherlock Holmes stories are written from the perspective of Dr. Watson's case files. Professor Moriarty is Sherlock's biggest and most dangerous nemesis. Very briefly mentioned, in the stage coach after dinner with Mary, was Sherlock's country summer home where his older brother, Mycroft, vacations. Mycroft is just as trained, intelligent, and arrogant as Sherlock but slightly more colder in his logic (but only slightly) and far more disciplined in his life style as a government official. In some stories he is a member of parliament, in others he is a consultant/advisor of politicians. Spends a lot of his time in the country clubs rubbing elbows with the men of power in England and foreign ambassadors. Very little is actually written about the rest of Sherlock's past and family, so many films and TV shows get creative on those aspects. Safe to say is that Holmes is one of 3-4 kids, 2-3 boys (a few films/shows say he had a third brother, others don't) and 1 girl, and their mother and father were very intelligent and well off as they lived in that country summer home when the kids were growing up and they did have a nanny/governess, maid, and butler in their employ; hence Sherlock's playful disdain with his landlady. His experience with servants in general, and cases in which the servant is usually the culprit, have left him bias and suspicious of all servants. They are quite people, always listening and seeing everything while being ignored in society, and almost always hide their motives. Whereas he loves street urchins and lowlifes because they also see and hear everything while being invisible to society but they rarely hide their motives. Far more honest individuals. Where Mycroft is well connected in the political, diplomat, and wealthy communities, Sherlock is well connected in the beggar, thug, and thief communities. The best films and shows to round out Sherlock Holmes are these 2 films buy Guy Richie (a third is in production, btw), both "Enola Holmes" films on Netflix (Millie Bobby Brown plays the younger sister of Holmes, Sherlock is played by Henry Cavill, lol, and Helena Bonham Carter plays their mother), and the series "Sherlock" with Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange and Smaug in the Hobbit films) as Sherlock and Martin Freeman (Bilbo in the Hobbit films) as Watson; 4 seasons, 3 episodes a season, and each episode is a full length film (and based on the actual cases from the novels).

Great reaction V... I think that this interpretation of Sherlock Holmes character is a workable one when those stories are read, or so I found it that way. The concept of Sherlock Holmes as a cultural character was mostly influenced by the older movies which showed Holmes as a "brain" mostly. The actual writings do have Holmes as a capable combatant due to his obsessive study of any science that could assist him in a role as a consulting detective which also included martial arts (a fictional one called "Baritsu" I believe). The actual character of Watson is a dullard only in comparison to Holmes and Watson was a military veteran prior to his meeting Holmes. I also second the notion that the series "Sherlock" is a superior characterization of Holmes (and Watson especially) and hope to be able to watch a future reaction to that one. Cheers.

This was such a great reaction. It is gonna make an epic You Tube edit. I think you would really enjoy the sequel (infinity likes). If you enjoy the Sherlock Holmes character there are a lot more amazing versions. From the classic Young Sherlock Holmes from the 80's that was a pioneer for visual effects or any of the tv shows (Sherlock, Elementary, House). They even made a Sherlock Holmes with Ian McKellen, called Mr Holmes. Did I miss any who is your favorite Holmes. Thanks for the great reaction Vee!

Baron

This. It's significantly better in all respects. Especially the first couple of seasons.
