Hellraiser | Full Length Reaction!
Added 2024-11-08 00:05:02 +0000 UTCIM SORRY I DIDNT POST THIS SOONER there's been quite a backlog of movies lately 😅😅 but I have to tell you guys, this was THE MOST.. DISGUSTING MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. I really struggled to get through it. The practical effects were amazing and made me almost shut the movie off and give up a FEW times throughout the film... You'll see what parts I'm talking about 😭 although I hate gore and brutal horror like this, I can still appreciate the uniqueness behind the film and its concept - not only that but the skilled used of practical effects made it one of the most high quality classic horror films I think I may have ever seen. Let me know what made you love or dislike this film, and your own personal experiences with it - here's mine 😆😆

Aww, this was not a fun reaction because you were having an absolutely awful time.

2024-11-15 08:40:55 +0000 UTCA great watch, TBH Vee, you did well to endure this classic 😁 I've loved this film (and it's first two sequels, for the most part) for decades. I loved it for what it was when I was younger but now that I'm old and a bit wiser I like to believe that Hellraiser is a story about being unfulfilled with life, finding a way to sate that yearning for something more and different and the dangers around how you deal with that. In that context, Frank & Julia are very similar: both trapped in situations of their own making and each is offered an escape from that (via each other, in this case) which they both grasp with both hands, so to speak. The grass isn't always greener though, as they both find out as they are the real villains of the film: the Cenobites are just performing their designated role in the grand scheme of things but Frank & Julie willingly commit evil acts against random people and both actively (and fatally) betray someone who loves them. Using the film as a framework for yearning for, and finding, more than you have, it also can be used to tell a tale of someone feeling a pull towards a taboo activity and how indulging in that via a gateway to somewhere new can destroy your home environment and turn your life upside-down. Clive Barker is a homosexual, so one could equate this tale as an overview of what might've happened when Barker, the author, was first exploring this lifestyle: the lament configuration box's keeper is someone suggesting that he go for it and points him towards a gay or S&M bar or club. The lament configuration itself can be seen as that bar or club, the gateway through which someone can be exposed to the new experiences they believe they want. However, first contact with such indulgencies can lead to shock and revulsion (demons) to some) or warmth and acceptance (angels) to others. The appearance of the Cenobites is influenced by the leather & PVC warn by some who belong to that lifestyle and the ensuing destruction of the house in the film can be seen as that person's home life and friendships being wrecked by them coming out as homosexual and the lack of acceptance that can bring. That's my take anyway, but generally Clive Barker's work is fantastic if you like the kind of tales (not always horror but there is usually that aspect somewhere) that involve normal people having to handle a surreal and baffling situation that they've been thrust into.

2024-11-15 01:44:40 +0000 UTCI haven't seen parts of this movie since like 1993 when I was 10, lol. Even though it was scary for me then, it also felt stupid silly scary in a non threatening way to me even at 10 years old like........why is he even dressed like that??? What purpose does it serve? In my head they became "joke horror" movies. "Oh I put pins in my body! Fear me!" Couldn't take it seriously. I'm so curious to find out if the answers in the plot even make sense to me now, that I'm gonna watch it in full for the first time with your reaction. Either I didn't have a good enough attention span back then to understand it, or it really didn't make any sense. Looking forward to finding out!

2024-11-08 19:39:03 +0000 UTCSPOILER... in case there is a desire to read the novella... Kirsty is actually granted a role as caretaker of the box at the end... until another seeker/victim is found to give the box to...

2024-11-08 06:34:13 +0000 UTCNow, from the sound of it, it doesn’t sound like you are planning on continuing the series. I would recommend the sequel, Hellbound, and the last film Hellraiser 2022 to fully understand the lore but I also can explain the lore below. Reminder, this is spoilers of the lore, not the films. So…, lol, Hellraiser lore. Hellraiser is a creation from the mind of Clive Barker. A horror erotic fantasy writer/graphic novelist that gets overshadowed by Stephen King quite a lot. Both were producing stories at the same time. Hellraiser is one of his more gruesome stories. Side note: his book The Thief of Always (one of my favorites) has zero gore and is more of a young teen book and almost wholesome, btw. He writes in many different genera and age ranges quite well. The second most prolific story, next to Hellraiser, is Night Breed, imho, but he is also the creator of Candyman. The gore is turned way way way down for Night Breed and I highly recommend the film if you enjoyed the creativity of Hellraiser. Hellraiser is one of 11 films now. Since this film occurred in the 80’s with Jason and Freddy and Michael Myers and so on. Hellraiser followed suit to bank on the gorefest money of reoccurring sequels, lol. Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 is the only quality sequel in most people’s opinions. In fact it is seen as better than the first in some cases. Hellraiser 2 isn’t quite as gory but there definitely is gore. But it continues the story of Kristy and even gives some backstory on the box and the Cenobites. Even touches on how the current Cenobites came to be. Each film focuses on a person that opens/finds the box, the one who summons Hell, a literal Hell Raiser. The Cenobites. There are many Cenobites over the coarse of the series but these first ones are labeled Pinhead, Chatter, Butterball, Wall Crawler, and Female Cenobite (lol, she never got a nickname, sadly). Also, Pinhead was not called Pinhead until fans started to call him Pinhead. Clive Barker is well known for hating that nickname. Pinhead is the leader of the Cenobites, for the most part (one of the films involves a Cenobite power struggle which is rather entertaining, lol). The balance between pleasure and pain thing is merely a lifestyle of the Cenobites. It is Hell, where the most hedonistic and taboo experiences are forever explored, including cosmic existence (there is a Hellraiser in Space movie, lol). Hellraiser plays with the idea that for those willing to cross the line of existence, there is a place for them. Those that find life boring and the people in it dull, there is something new for them. However, from the perspective of the Cenobites, they are quite literally fishing with hooks and the box as bait for their next plaything that they can “share” this experience with. This does, in fact, come from Clive Barker’s perspective, in part. Clive Barker, in irl, is kind of a weird guy. He is eccentric, dismissive, and kinda bored with the ‘normies’ of society, lol. He is a little bit of a dick in person but he is also an artist of the erotic genre so…it kinda makes sense, lol. The most recent Hellraiser movie, Hellraiser 2022, bursts the lore wide open and spells it all out for you. Basically, Hellraiser is Clive Barker’s way of writing within the ancient religious lore. The box is a key to a ‘gift’ from Hell. In ancient religious lore, there is the idea of what existed before God said “Let there be light”. What existed is referred to as Leviathan, an entity of insatiable hunger for everything, that blanketed all of the universe in darkness until God’s light pushed it into the bottomless pit of Limbo, the space between spaces. Leviathan has some crossover with Cthulhu lore as well as one of the Deep One priests of Cthulhu, the unimaginable horror (as in you will go insane if you look upon it), whose only goal is to awaken its master from its endless slumber; another Heaven/Hell dynamic since Slumber is Heaven but Endless would be Hell. In Hellraiser, Leviathan rules over Hell and appears in the shape of endlessly shifting rhombus (Side note: on a quantum scale, it is theorized that endlessly shifting geometric shapes is what a quark, and thus inevitably all matter, is made of). And that this pain/pleasure dichotomy is a more recent concept/perspective of Hell; not as forever torturous but as “Endless Experiences” (Clive Barker’s eroticism comes from these philosophies). This is, in part, a perspective that is popular with Satanists and Heathens, as those that embrace the indulgences, but within reason. The Cenobites are Leviathan’s minions/generals/torturers of sorts. Most people that open the box end up as play things for the Cenobites, like Frank. But, a smart person that finds a way to open the box without touching it and sacrificing others to the Cenobites and Leviathan, is given a chance at a ‘gift’ from Hell. This is seen more in the second Hellraiser movie, and the most recent one. Most of the other Hellraiser films are just feeding off the thrill money they bring in. Now, the last film in the series, spells out the different ‘gifts’ that Hell will grant, which is 1 of 6. 1 for each side/configuration of the box. Each symbol on the box represents the ‘gift’ it offers. Each ‘gift’ is has a downside, of course, but they are true gifts in the sense of the word. They are genuine, that is. But it is more of a ‘be careful what you wish for’ type of ‘gift’. The Hellraiser series has not explored all these ‘gift’ options thus far except for 3 of them. The box is always presented in the 1st configuration, the Lament (Life) configuration because that is where all ‘experiences’ start; life must exist first for experiences to even matter. And this is one of the ‘gifts’ you may choose. It returns you to your life where you will live and die with suffering, just like all the other sheep. Not the worst of downsides from our perspective but from a Cenobite’s perspective it is truly torturous, lol. This is the only configuration/gift we see in the first movie. We only see someone choose another configuration in the second movie and then another in the most recent movie. All the other movies touch on lore and drama within Hell. How the boxes, yes there are many of them, were made. How the Cenobites became what they are. And a bunch of unlucky or ridiculous people that encounter the box. The other 5 gifts/configurations are Lore (Knowledge), Lauderant (Love), Liminal (Sensation), Lazarus (Resurrection), and Leviathan (Power). I’m sure you can surmise how such gifts can very easily have downsides.

2024-11-08 06:33:44 +0000 UTCI don't know how literary Vee is however, the Clive Barker novella that this movie is based on is "The Hellbound Heart". I imagine this is in reference to Julia's heart and the novella reveals more about exactly how Frank was able to escape the Cenobites to begin with. It also explains the homeless dude ("The Engineer") as the caretaker of the box (referred to as the "Lament Configuration" in Hellraiser lore). Also the Cenobite referred to as "Pinhead" started off as actually a minor side character. Loved the reaction... and nearly getting sick and nearly turning off the movie is definitely a reaction.
